Soda Springs Surpasses 1 Million Kilowatt Hours

Soda Springs breaks a century of growth by using 1,072,200 kilowatt hours in a 30 day period from Nov 21 to Dec 21. Max Snell reports the five year period average was 678,200 kilowatt hours. The town now has 1,162 electrical customers up from 812 five years ago.

Paintings by Local Artists on Display at Soda Springs

Four landscape paintings by Soda Springs artists Mrs. Jim Ink, Mrs. Clifford Jones, and Mrs. Don Strickfaden are on display at the First National Bank. The Soda Springs Art Group meets twice monthly with instructor Marlin Bingham of Blackfoot. An exhibit is planned for next month.

Hospital Receives $400 Donation for Defibrillator

Mrs. Pearl Fryar administrator of Caribou County Hospital Soda Springs received a $400 check from Paul Roberts Machine Shop Pocatello. The note wished health beyond Christmas and said donations were made in the name of the shop’s customers and employees toward buying a defibrillator.

Idaho Dog Hero of the Year 1966

Hero the blue merle collie from Priest River Idaho earned America's Dog Hero of the Year 1966 after saving 3 year old Shawn Jolley from a rampaging horse on a Northern Idaho farm. Hero suffered injuries including crushed forefeet broken ribs and lost teeth yet recovered to continue competing at dog shows weeks later.

Funeral services held for Jerry L. Skinner in Soda Springs

Jerry L. Skinner 22 of Soda Springs died after a car he worked on at Call Motor Co slipped from a jack on December 23. Funeral services were Tuesday at the Idaho LDS Stake Center with Bishop Max Christensen presiding. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery. Survivors include his widow Kayrl Hayes and two sons Brett and Jeffry Lynn. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery.

Christmas Concert by Soda Springs High School Wins Praise

A large audience attended the annual Christmas Concert by Soda Springs High School band chorus and drama departments. Directed by Bob Summers and Elaine Santos the cantata Behold The Star featured about 80 students, world carols, familiar melodies, and tableaux depicting the birth of Christ.

A correction note says the Christmas vacation dates were misstated in last week's Sun. Classes will reconvene Monday January 2 instead of January 27.

Funeral services for Clinton A. Piar 77 of Soda Springs will be held Friday at 11 am at Allen Funeral Home. Friends may call Thursday 1 to 8 pm and Friday prior to services. Mr Piar died Wednesday at Caribou County Hospital after a stroke. Details were unavailable.

Big game hunter report cards urged for return

Idaho Fish and Game urges hunters to mail back report cards by the December 20 cutoff. Deer and elk tallies through that date show 15 200 deer and 4 900 elk killed, with gains over last year. Other harvests include antelope 857 moose 43 big horn sheep 12 and mountain goat 120.

Ref-Chem Awarded Contract To Build New Fertilizer Plant

Salt Lake City Mountain Fuel Supply Company awards a 4 million dollar contract to Ref Chem Engineering and Construction Co for washing and calcining phosphate ore near Soda Springs Idaho and to Wells Cargo Inc for mining and hauling ore in the same area. The project will employ 150 to 200 workers and proceed through winter as permitting allows. Mountain Fuel plans to produce marketable phosphate rock by late 1967.

Will Move to Logan

Frank and Mrs. Weaver of Soda Springs announce they will move within two weeks. Frank, manager of KBRV radio, will take gin classes at Utah State University in Logan at winter quarter start. Mrs. Weaver will teach science at Logan Junior High School beginning January 16.

Funeral Services For J. Bert Muir

J Bert Muir a longtime Grays Lake rancher and Soda Springs resident died December 22 after a heart attack at Caribou County Hospital. He served on the Grays Lake School Board 1942 1962 and helped bring electric power to the area. He is survived by his widow Virginia Hill their son Jay and three grandchildren. Funeral services conducted by Bishop Robert Herd at the Springs First Ward LDS Chapel with numerous family and church members in attendance.
