The Soda Springs Chamber of Commerce and city sponsor a larger contest with two divisions residential and business. Judging weighs artistic effect 40 percent, conformity and Christmas spirit 20 percent each, and originality 20 percent. Winners announced December 19 with names in the Sun and on KBRV Radio.
The Soda Springs Junior High music department presents a carnival Christmas Concert in the high school auditorium on December 22 at 7 30. The program features band numbers and 6th 7th 8th grade choruses plus vocal group performances directed by Robert Amers and Winfred Alldaffer. Idaho airwaves welcomed its first TV station in June 1959.
The Associated Taxpayers of Idaho claim homeowners will shoulder more tax load to balance business taxes. Executive manager Max Yost states average homeowners’ taxes may rise 100 percent by 1969, farmers up 33 percent, while commercial interests see little or no change. He cites the 1965 Legislature’s assessment equalization bill targeting 20 percent of cash value for real and personal property and utilities.
Employment in Caribou County rose 12 percent from March 1964 to March 1965 in the county business patterns 1965 Idaho report by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Total payroll data cover most private industries, excluding agriculture and government. Retail trade employs 271 with $180 000 in quarterly payrolls. manufacturing employs 260 with $438 000.
The Grace Lions Club sponsors a project to assign and install street numbers on all homes and businesses in the Village of Grace at a nominal $1.00 each. Proceeds fund street signs at village intersections in spring, a joint Lions Club and Village of Grace effort.
Yost outlined proposed assessment shifts affecting homeowners farms and downtown commercial property with past rates of 10 15 and 20 percent respectively and utilities at 30 percent of cash value. He projected increases by 1969 to reach about 40 percent for homeowners and similar rises across sectors.
L F Whitey Jacobsen of Montpelier Idaho has been named plant superintendent for Mountain Fuel Supply Companys new phosphate washing and calcining plant to be built near Soda Springs. He will be based in Salt Lake City until construction starts and will maintain residence in Montpelier. Jacobsen has extensive Idaho phosphate experience and most recently worked as a field engineer for Dorr Oliver Inc. Mountain Fuel plans to sell phosphate rock to fertilizer makers in the western United States and Canada. Construction work has begun south of El Paso Products Co with foundations planned if weather allows.
AAA warns drivers to slow down as daylight fades earlier in the year. Good drivers adjust speed to navigate residential streets safely and reduce risk during darker commutes.
North Gem High School at Ban croft was robbed in the early hours before Monday. A metal door was forced in the girls locker room and the superintendent DeWayne Christensen’s office was entered. About $950 in cash and related checks were taken. portable office equipment was untouched. Sheriff Ralph Marriott investigates.
The Idaho Cities Legislative Committee in Boise proposes boosting city finances via 10 percent of state sales tax to cities, a 1 cent gasoline tax for highways, recodification of municipal laws, opposition to Fire Marshall Bill as written, support for court reform with limits on city ordinance cases, endorsement of Uniform Assessment Act, 50 percent of Aviation Fuel tax returned to local airports, elimination of county tax collection fees, and higher county levy for public health funding. Mayor Chris Phelps of Soda Springs attended.
Jake Tennant of Soda Springs has two hobby articles in national publications. One piece in Coin Collector shows him with an unusual $10 bill with a center white strip after misprinting. He notes the bill is rarely circulated without being caught. A second article appeared in Rocks and Minerals in November 1966.
City delivery patrons are asked to keep an open approach to curbside mail boxes so the mounted carrier can deliver without dismounting. Do not park cars near the boxes and clear snow from the approach to assist the daily route. John J. Delo, Postmaster.
Don Teeters and wife move Soda Springs Builders Supply into a two story building on Second South with 3100 square feet for retail stock and an upper level apartments. A big sale begins today to liquidate merchandise from the old store as business expands with a larger builders supply line and added trucks. Teeters purchased Gagon Lumber Co in May and relocated from Valdez Alaska. The firm markets Soda Springs as the Phosphate Capital of the World. Bear River Valley Rock Society notes and Henry Thomas fossil collection activity accompany the item.
