Winter Driving Hints Offered by Soda Springs Chief

Soda Springs Chief of Police Blynn B Wilcox shared winter driving tips noting ordinary snow tires offer no stopping edge on ice. Studded tires give 19 percent improvement and reinforced tire chains 50 percent when stopping on ice. He urged steady pace and warned against sudden changes in speed or direction. Studded tires on all four wheels improve directional control and reduce skidding. Studies show studded tires yield about three times the pull on glare ice. reinforced chains seven times. conventional snow tires 28 percent better for starting on glare ice. In loose snow the snow tire doubles pull while reinforced chains quadruple it. He concluded adverse traction problems can be minimized by a prepared vehicle and alert driver.
