Executives D For Ag Program Keeps Expansion Hints

Idaho Basque Dancers Top Show at National Folk Festival

Idaho's Basque Dancers and Milwaukee Serbian Dancers were hailed as outstanding features of the 29th National Folk Festival by Wiltis and Louise Shadduck. The Serbs received a standing ovation and offered to help cover half the Basques' transport to Milwaukee, marking a first invitation to an outside group. The Basques earned four additional festival invitations nationwide.

Local TV Firm Starts New Cable System Near Soda Springs

Ray Horner announces preliminary work on a 6.4 mile aluminum coaxial cable project to serve all Soda Springs areas from a mountain antenna site. The system will carry six TV channels and seven FM stations, with construction by W. R. Meceico & Co. and MacKenzie Electric Co. at an estimated cost of 26000 dollars. The Boise Idaho office of the Soil Conservation Service announced over 145 films available for circulation to schools farm groups churches and clubs from the Portland Oregon Motion Picture Library. Subjects cover soil water conservation land use resources recreation districts watersheds wildlife and woodland management with titles like Adventures of Junior Raindrop and Our Land Its Many Faces. Films may be obtained by written request and are distributed without charge though borrowers pay return postage.

Idaho Recruits Begin Nine-Week Navy Training Program

Ins of 3408 Second gil of Soda Springs Idaho forgo nine weeks of basic training at the Naval Training Center here. They receive instruction in Naval customs courtesies and organizations ordnance and gunnery seamanship damage control first aid swimming survival shipboard drills and sentry duty. A program of physical fitness military drill and inspections keeps the recruits mentally and physically alert during their eight tests to determine assignment after graduation.

Fire Danger Still Critical In Caribou National Forest

Caribou National Forest remains in critical fire danger with a limited closure in effect. Ranger Roy Daniels urges all entrants to carry a bucket shovel and axe and follows strict fire safety rules including ash disposal, built fires in designated areas, and keeping a clear 10 foot mineral bare dirt circle. Seven of 15 fires this year were man caused. Remember these are your forests and stay vigilant.

Whitworth Completes Advanced Infantry Training

Army Private Wesley C. Whitworth, 20, son of Mr and Mrs Herbert K Whitworth of Bancroft, finished 10 weeks of advanced infantry training at Fort Clayton Canal Zone in August. Course covered map and compass, land mine warfare, M 14 rifle and M 6 machine gun, jungle warfare survival and counterinsurgency.

Soda Springs Kiwanis heard Delvan Hibbert of the Fish and Game Department explain salmon and steelhead runs in the Columbia River and their link to Idaho waters. He outlined problems facing the runs and measures to protect them in Oregon and Idaho. Also, Mr and Mrs Russell Gunnell and four sons moved to Murtaugh Idaho after purchasing a farm, ending years in Soda Springs.
