Clifford Thompson, Seaman First Class, is reported missing at sea while serving aboard the U S S Warrington after the destroyer was sunk off the Atlantic coast during a hurricane. He joined in October 1942 and served 20 months in the South Pacific, taking part in battles at the Hismarck Sea Bougainville and Admiralty Islands. His father, Homer Thompson, resides west of Carey.

Crawford boy lands 19 ½ pound carp in Tymochtee Creek
Fourteen year old Gene Needles son of Mr and Mrs Elza Needles of Crawford caught a 19 ½ pound carp on a dock and line in Tymochtee Creek Friday evening. He waded out to land the fish and brought it to shore for dressing and freezing at the Vanlue locker with his parents.

Dorothy Sherman a 14 year old girl from E Brown avenue vanished from Col Crawford school grounds last Thursday morning after telling a teacher she would go to Findlay with a brother. She wore a blue flowered dress, blue jacket, black oxfords, has reddish brown hair and blue eyes. She had previously spoken of going to Toledo Marion or Friday to obtain work and claimed to have hitchhiked to Detroit upon return.

Funeral mass for Sgt Ralph I Derr killed in France
Sgt Ralph I Derr 27 son of Mr and Mrs Herman J Derr of 3 miles southwest of Carey was killed in action in France August 17. A memorial Mass was held at Our Lady of Consolation Church with Rev Ambrose Finnegan celebrating. Military honors were provided by Earl Green Post 44. Derr belonged to the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion. His brother Cpl Joseph Derr serves on the East coast.
