Gust Peter of north of town speaks of engagement with the European conflict. He recalls his borderland farm background in France and Germany and notes three nephews serving in the French army. Peter landed in Shelby as a 15 year old refugee after 1870 advancing past language barriers and hardship in a new country.
Surprise resignation of Rev. J. O. Simon after four years as pastor at the First Lutheran church. He is expected to move to Cedar Rapids Iowa to lead another large Lutheran church in the middle west.
Last Sunday Mrs A C Greer received a telegram announcing the death of her father J Van Nest of Tiffin. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Greer left for Tiffin Monday and their children Helen Florence and Mr Rugsel left Tuesday. This was the Greers second funeral call within a week.
Earl Williams of Detroit visited his parents and was greeted with congratulations on a recent marriage. Friends learned it was not "Turtle" who wed but an Earl Williams of Fostorin, causing surprised reactions among locals.
A writing home from Paso last week reports two cavalrymen died after wandering from camp. They were bitten by rattlesnakes and found dead after a search. The letter notes many snakes are found wherever they step.

Six miles northwest of town on Friday N O Copley presented the office with a fine Crawford peach display. The single tree yielded a bushel and a half of perfect fruit while much of the fruit this year is small and tasteless.
The R F O M class of the U B Sunday school holds a meeting this evening at Miss Ethel Phillips home. All members are urged to attend as the class will be reorganized and other important business addressed.
School official C M Beitler urges parents to prevent dances and parties during the school week to keep students focused on study and food work. He says letting children roam the streets leads to poorer results and calls for holding events on Fridays or Saturdays to avoid interfering with school.

Last week Graham T Buechland escorted Charles Willis to the Toledo work house where he serves a sentence for drunkeness and disorderly conduct. Willis, intoxicated, attempted to force entry into the Charles Shaw residence on Patterson street. Willis belongs to the Big Four steel gang.
Walter Fouke, former town official, encountered legal trouble in Marion over bicycle theft allegations. He is reported to be in Marion city jail awaiting trial on grave charges.

The Woman's Home Missionary Society of the M E church held its regular meeting at Mrs. Robert Gregg's home last Thursday afternoon. Miss Ella Gibbs read the scripture lesson, prayers followed, and readings were given by Mrs. Wesley Patterson and Mrs. Anna Thatcher. Mrs. Cosgray spoke on a Woman's Auxiliary and How it Grows, with discussions on Home Missionary Economics led by Mrs. George Ash. The next gathering is set for the second Thursday in October at Mrs. Ash's home.
Adam Roszman came home from Grant hospital after clot removal from the right brain caused by a wagon accident last June with a Big Mouth train. Doctors used a sweat cap and mercury injections. the head pain is cured though sight in the right eye is nearly gone. He expects to resume work with the National Line & Stone Co.
Frank Kemerley, then in the Times office, will move his family to a new 40 acre farm two and a half miles southeast of Arlington on October 1. They have lived on the Bartlet place near Carey. Orville Staley will succeed Mr Shemerley in the neighborhood.
Graham Buckland and D I Geiger testified before the grand jury in Marion last week about Caboose robbers captured recently and given a preliminary hearing before Mayor Chambers. The young boy who aided the robbers and testified against them escaped from authorities.
Mr and Mrs A C Greer and daughters Helen and Florence and son Russell went to Tiffin last Thursday to attend the funeral of Mrs Greer's brother-in-law W W Bemisderfer who died suddenly from a nervous breakdown. Bemisderfer was well known in Carey as a butter and egg buyer.
