Carey Meets Columbus Grove In Weekend Clash At 2 PM

Carey prepares for its second home game of the grid season against Columbus Grove Friday at 2:00. Carey enters with 2-0 after beating Mt. Gilead 32-0 and Pandora 7-0. Columbus Grove is 2-0 but faces a strong Blue and White squad in front of a large crowd.

Flood lights planned for present high school field

Bowman electric shop will install flood light equipment totaling 2500 dollars on the current high school field. The lights will be moved later to the new park when ready, two years away. Funds come from a popular subscription with further donations needed for installation labor. Contributions may be left with Harry Iden, Henry Pieracini, Norman Zahn, or Harry Mapes. Lights expected in operation by October 12 for the North Baltimore game.

Orien Wilgus Released From Army Air Forces

First Lieutenant Orien D. Wilgus of Carey Ohio was honorably released to inactive duty at Camp Beale California. He served overseas on a combat air crew and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross the Air Medal the Presidential Unit Citation and the China Burma India theater ribbon. His wife Mrs Orion D Wilgus is Virginia Mitchell daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Mitchell of Clay Street.

Victory Class Meets for First Fall Session

Carey Boy Seeks Earliest Arrival in Japan

Cpl Clarence Pahl, son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Pahl, asks The Carey Times if he was the first Carey boy to land on Japan. He arrived at Atsugi airfield near Tokyo on August 30 1945 at 6 30 am after flying from Okinawa in a C 54. He notes other Carey men arrived August 28 and 31 and recalls seeing the first American flag raised at Atsugi by the 11th airborne.

Priests Retreat Opens at Our Lady Shrine

The first of four clergy retreat weeks for priests opened Sunday evening at Our Lady of Consolation Shrine with closing exercises each Thursday morning. Carey Community War Chest Sets 4100 Goal for October Drive

The Carey campaign aims to raise 4100 with allocations to National War Fund 2750 Boys and Girls Activities 700 Carey Schools Bard 200.69 Wyandot County Health Tuberculosis Assen 250 Carey Welfare Board 200. The drive runs October 1 to 22 with the Welfare Board reinstated. This is the last year for the National War Fund and asks individuals to give about a third of 1% of yearly salary.

Clayton Twin ing elected commander of post

Clayton Twin ing was elected commander of Earl Green Post No 344, American Legion, for 1946 at a Tuesday meeting. Other officers named include Henry Brown as 1st vice commander and Orville Wohlgamuth as 2nd vice commander. SGT Charles Dill Awarded Bronze Star Medal

Sergeant Charles L. Dill of Carey Ohio receives the Bronze Star for heroism on Luzon during the Baguio action. Dill led his machine gun squad after his gunner was killed, destroyed a Japanese position, and completed the company's mission. He is a 39 month overseas veteran with service on New Georgia Bougainville Fiji Guadalcanal and Russell Islands. He also holds the Combat Infantryman Badge Asiatic Pacific ribbon with two Battle Stars.

Carrots Brought to Times Office by Mrs Jacob

Two unusually large carrots were delivered to The Times office last week. One carrot measured 9% inches in circumference and 8 inches long, the other 10 inches around and 6% inches long. They were grown by Mrs. Peter Jacob of W Brown Avenue.

Cpl James F. Dill, discharged at Indiantown Gap Pa, returns to Carey living with mother Mrs George Dill. Inducted July 30 1942, went overseas November 1 1942, spent nearly two years in Iran with Persian Gulf Command driving heavy duty trucks to Russians. Photos of convoy appeared in Life. Transferred to France via Suez, fought through Belgium into Germany hauling ammunition and prisoners of war. First Case of Polio Reported in Wyandot County

Mr and Mrs Herbert Baker of Wharton visited their daughter Betty Lou a patient in Children's hospital Columbus for polio treatment. Betty Lou 16 was ill since Tuesday last week and is in good condition. She was a Wharton high school student.

Vincent Brooks Burned At Davis Duck Farm

Vincent Brooks, a worker at the Davis duck farm near Crawford, suffered third degree burns to his neck and face when a gasoline-cleaned barrel exploded after he lit a match to check cleanliness. He was taken to Bucyrus City Hospital for treatment and observation for several days.

Methodist Library Open For Free Sunday Viewing

Fires Destroy Two Barns Near Carey

Two fires near Carey Saturday consumed a 40 by 64 foot barn and a 16 foot shed at J F Bakers farm north of Carey. Losses totaled about seven to eight thousand dollars with partial insurance. A second fire at Raymond Riedlinger’s farm west of Carey destroyed a large barn and its contents totaling about seven thousand dollars with limited insurance.

Stolen Car Found Stripped and Burned in Woods

An automobile stolen September 11 at Ashland was found stripped of accessories and tires, then burned in the Spook woods near Nevada in Antrim township. The sheriff of Ashland County was asked to identify the wreckage by its license plate. A similar disposal occurred near Old Fort in Seneca county, suggesting tire and accessory thieves are active in the area.
