Carey PTA begins the 1962 63 season with a Monday 8 p.m. meeting at Carey High School. New teachers and staff are introduced and plans for the year are outlined. Officers and committees are announced with Mrs. Wendell Myers presiding and refreshments served afterward.
Military personnel A B Thomas and A Krom Jr. update their mailing details at Biloxi Mississippi. The note lists 3396th S S C MLA 4 T Box 19332 Keesler Air Force Base for Biloxi Mississippi.
Results from the carcass cut out demonstration at the Wyandot County Fair show Gaylord Derr of Carey with 38.46 percent the best loin and ham yield relative to chilled carcass weight. Paul Arnold, also of Carey, placed third with 35.27 percent. Ohio State University Meats Lab's Paul Althouse attended the meeting at Carey High School with Carl Cupp coordinating.
Zimmermans Greenhouses and Flower Shop of Upper Sandusky opened a florist shop at 108 E Findlay Street in the Rook building. The cooler is active, workroom set up, and stock growing daily for funerals weddings corsages potted plants and nursery stock. Mr and Mrs Jon Zimmerman and Mrs John Beard will run the Carey store.
Frank Miller aged 92, resident of St. Francis Home in Tiffin, will celebrate Saturday. He previously lived near Carey for about 38 years. Droll family including son-in-law Wilfred Droll and daughters Carol and Darlene, plus Sister Angelette of the Notre Dame, and other relatives plan visits and a later celebration. He would enjoy hearing from Carey friends.
The Crawford-Ridge Home Demonstration Group will begin its season with a gathering at 1 pm Monday at 108 Dow Street, hosted by Mrs Linus Myers. Mrs Paul Wonder and Mrs William Kitzler will demonstrate cake decorating as seniors and juniors councilors look on. all interested persons are invited.
The Pentecostal Church of God on Shuman Road hosts revival services starting 7:45 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Johnny Wayne Stalls as evangelist and Kentucky State youth director. Prayer for the sick planned each night. Rev. Willard J. Holbrook is pastor.
The new thrift shop at 126 S Vance Street opens Saturday 9 am to 5 pm. It buys and sells used clothing and household items. Charles E Earhart is the proprietor.
Elmer Walter of Big Spring seeks a garagem addition with no estimate. Richard Hayman of Seneca township plans a remodel dwelling with no estimate. Bertha Wonder of Pleasant township files for a silo and corn crib with a value of 1938.94.
The five day Wyandot County Fair drew 17 589 visitors, up from 16 884 last year, despite muddy grounds from Thursday night rain. The Junior Fair livestock sale highlighted Saturday with Don Beaschler selling a champion hog for 2 10, bought by Lewis Buckingham. Auctioneers were Austin Walter, Ben Walter, and Col Louis Wickersham.
The greased pig contest drew 25 youths who will fatten their pigs for December show and sale. Area winners include Diane Derr Roger Kloepfer Terry Krupp Brad Roof Keith Baker Norman Risner Terry Rader Carey Janell Shane Troy Kear Gary Phelps Dan Park Wharton. Eugene Hendricks and Son Wool Buyers presented sheep shearing awards. Robert Welsh of Richwood scored 98.06 to win first prize 12 dollars. Joe Derr of Carey won champion dairy female Guernsey. Patty Seifert showed champion mare in 46 52 inch pony class. Wednesday's judging crowned Mark Kitzler champion bull and Gene Zimmerly champion boar and sow. Paul Grubel won Hereford lightweight ribbon while Terry Raders Hereford heavyweight earned an A rating. Top five owners listed include Judy Guthrie and Tom Smith among others. Junior Fair crowned Marilyn Schoenberger and Dal Heckathorn. Grand Parade capped the day after a 3 inch rain. crowded attendance despite mud.
The 25th anniversary of His Excellency Bishop Rehring’s consecration is observed with a Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving at Rosary Cathedral Toledo on Sunday September 30 at 4 p.m. The celebration recognizes his 1937 auxiliary appointment in Cincinnati and 1950 transfer as Toledo’s fourth bishop. Laity are invited to attend through their pastors.
Fire Chief Orion Wilgus reports spectators blocked Grove Street with autos during a September 2 fire, forcing arriving firefighters to abandon their vehicles and walk. He warned that a second unit could not reach the scene and promised further steps if the practice continues.
A fire at about 5 10 p m last Thursday damaged the Johnson home five miles north of Carey with $2000 in structure damage and $1500 in contents. A later blaze at the Ger Schutz farm on U S 23 destroyed a 40 by 80 foot barn and hay and straw, milking parlor and machine, with no loss estimate. The New Riegel and Carey fire departments fought both fires and saved little.
The Rev Zella Earhart of Marion is appointed pastor of the Church of God on East Findlay Street replacing Rev Elbert L Taulbee who moved to Ashtabula. Earhart has led various denomination churches for two years and resides at 534 West Street with her husband Charles. Regular services continue with Friday YPE at 7 30 PM and Wednesday prayer at 7 30 PM.
Friday night finals saw Harold Shiley and Mary Shiley defeat Lloyd Long and Robert Smith. Consolation match had Henry Pieracini and Mary Pieracini over Elsie Long and Denver Donelson. Tuesday night Harold Shiley and Edwin King defeated Helen King and Erma Smith. Clarence Reinhart and Denver Donelson beat Lloyd Long and Martha Reinhart in consolation. Social evening and refreshments planned for Friday. all members invited.
Our Lady of Consolation School reports 395 pupils for 1962 63 with 45 graduates last May attending Carey Public High and 6 girls at St Francis Convent High School in Tiffin. 56 new first graders join the class replacing graduates.
The West Building first grade under teacher Mrs Searfoss has 29 pupils: 16 boys and 13 girls. Victor G Worst left Sept 9 for Miami University Oxford to pursue a four year engineering course on a United States Navy scholarship. He recently spent 12 days with his parents and completed a nine week prep course at Bainbridge Maryland to qualify. He graduated Aug 10 and chose Miami from four colleges. His address is a Naval ROTC Building. Before Bainbridge he served on the USS Tench.
Fraternal Order of Eagles hosted Carey High School CHS football team and coaches for a pregame meal at the Eagles Hall with steak or fish, potatoes, salad, ice cream, cookies, and drinks. Jaycees provide postgame refreshments, praised by Coach Ron Petty for civic support benefiting the team.
Lewis Walter delivered the first 1962 corn to the Carey Farmers Co operative Co southwest of Carey on Tuesday noon. A. J. Dibling, the manager, said the corn was shelled and tested at 27.3 percent moisture.
After 2 01 a.m. November 17 1963 Harpster and Upper Sandusky subscribers will be able to call the other town without long distance charges. The Ohio Bell Telephone Co and the General Telephone Co will share eight miles of lines and circuits and install needed equipment.
Council members Clyde Jenkins Robert Heck and Clarence Hagley John Windau were reappointed to the Police Relief and Pension Fund Board and Firemen's Relief and Pension Fund Board for one year. Land purchase talks near Spring Grove Cemetery were tabled pending owner talks. Lester Salyer building purchase considered with price agreement pending. Water pressure fluctuations discussed and pumps noted as efficient. further investigation planned. Unpainted disposal plant buildings criticized. alternative housing for supplies discussed.
Police Justice Clyde Jenkins reported receipts of 245 dollars and 20 cents for fines costs and bond forfeitures during the month of August reflecting municipal revenue activity.
Grover Snyder at 737 E Findlay Street to enclose front porch and rear side of house. Ralph and Elizabeth McCarley at 137 S Lake Street to add 12 by 26 foot carport and move shed from back of lot to carport. Henry and Mary Cole at 201 E South Street to build 12 by 22 footframe garage. Councilman Robert Heck was absent and excused.
Carey Blue Devils upset Bucyrus by an 8-6 victory as Bucyrus hoped for a bigger win. Redmen scored early, then a two point conversion decided the game. Roger Dean scored on a 2 yard run in the third period. Charles Laudenslager completed 7 of 10 passes.
Airman First Class Thomas A. Krom Jr son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Krom of S Patterson Street completed basic training this week at Lackland Air Force Base Texas. He has been transferred to Keesler Air Force Base Biloxi Mississippi for further schooling.
The North Central Ohio Community Mental Health Clinic moved on Saturday to 675 St. Francis Avenue in the new Betty Jane Memorial Center, Tiffin. The facility also changed its name to Sandusky Valley Guidance Center.
The Elks Ladies host a luncheon and card party at 1 p.m. Thursday September 27. For reservations call Mrs. Robert Mott at 396 7135 by Tuesday noon.
