This week caps twelve years of school life with mixed emotions as the senior class bids farewell. Highlights include a volun tary study hall totaling about 3,200 hours and a baccalaureate service at the Methodist church led by Rev Marion E Jinsler, with Rev Roy B Leedy assisting.
The largest Carey High School graduation to date will feature 52 graduates this Thursday evening in the auditorium. The program includes processional Pomp and Circumstance, a Salutatory by Harold Krout, a Valedictory by Mary Haford, and diplomas presented by T. D Romig. Officers are Paul Burson president and Mary Haford secretary treasurer.
Business owners sign an agreement to close all day on Memorial Day and Thursday afternoons from June through August while remaining open on Thursday July 20. Named signatories include Linus L. Myers D C Henry & Co Simonis Harry Rook F H Frederick G C Wagner A & P J E Salisbury Mgr Pete's Market Krogers Jack French Mer Carey Cash Market R C Sanner.
Mr and Mrs J H Nye, long time Crawford store owners, have bought the Berwick general store from Mr and Mrs Herman Lonsway. Possession is set for June 9, and the Lonsways plan to move to Carey with their children. Mr Lonsway will remain with the New York Central Lines at Berwick as agent and operator.
Two new neon signs were installed in Cares over the past few days. A large General Electric and furniture sign in three colors lights Theis Furniture Exchange. The Soda Grill displays the words Tee Cream in neon.
The Victory class of the Methodist Sunday school will meet Thursday evening June 8 with Mrs George Shuman as hostess assisted by Mrs Ralph Heck.
The Farmers and Sportsmen's Protective Association expands to 165 members 125 sportsmen and 40 farmers. Members are urged to fully cooperate as work begins on a rearing pool and plans to clear backwater areas and build dams in Tymochtee creek. Work started last Sunday with Kenneth O'Brien's tractor and tools from Snyder Lumber Co. The group hopes to finish soon and continue evening labor.
Fire of undetermined origin encountered a Becker Roofing Co truck passing through Carey. Marshal Ed Weaver halted the vehicle at Alester's garage but the driver stopped at Shuman filling station. Firefighters extinguished the blaze destroying the truck body and its roofing materials bound for Upper Sandusky.
Fred Corwin of Fremont former Carey resident suffered several broken ribs when his car was struck by a Mercury streamliner at a grade crossing in Fremont on Thursday evening May 11. The car was wrecked and carried 100 feet along the track before he was freed and taken to Community hospital for treatment.
The Callahan family thanks neighbors and friends for kindness during the illness and death of their son Calvin. They commend Rev Clouser for comforting words and recognize the Lutheran church Junior Choir.
Banns were published Sunday at Our Lady of Consolation church for the approaching marriage of Robert Kitzler, son of Mr and Mrs Fran Kitzler, south of town, to Miss Edith Greeno, daughter of Mrs Reta Greeno of S Patterson street.
Henrietta Jacoby of Carey and Melvin Hipp of Monroeville named commencement orators after winning a public speaking contest judged by F J Miller A M Reichard and E M Huth They will speak on Success is Happiness and American Idealism with alternates listed and Jacoby noted as a Carey High School graduate and Delta Beta Alpha Iota member
Annual Memorial services at the Methodist church on Sunday May 28 are led by Earl Green Post American Legion. Members meet at 10 am. decoration at Spring Grove cemetery at 10 am Tuesday May 30. Legionnaires gather 9 am at the Legion hall and meet at the cemetery gate at 10 30 am for the program including invocation by Father Joseph, selection by Carey Schools Band, address by Rev Paul R Clouser, wreath placing, Star Spangled Banner, Benediction by Rev Roy B Teedy, firing squad and taps. Transportation requests should be directed to a legionnaire.
A music recital is set for Sunday May 28 at 8 PM in the Catholic hall featuring students taught by Sister Mary Victoria. Winners of the contest will be announced and prizes awarded. Full program shown on page 4.
Miss Mary Elizabeth Haferd received a 17 jewel Gruen watch from Stever Bros jewelers in Findlay as a prize for her winning essay Why I Am Proud To Be An American. She belongs to Carey High School class of 39 and the entire class contributed essays.
All members of the Young Ladies Sodality are requested to attend a meeting on June 14 in the Catholic hall. The notice calls for prompt gathering of the group.
A notice invites all girls aged 10 to 20 interested in 4-H work to contact Margaret Wenzinger or Caroline Kummerer by June 22.
Mrs J J McCabe is guest of her daughter Mrs Harry M Grinton in Cleveland. Before returning home she will also be a guest at the home of another daughter Mrs Harold Hoover in Akron.
Little red poppies bloom on coats as a national reminder of World War I dead and disabled veterans. The poppy funds aid rehabilitation and family welfare through American Legion Auxiliary, supporting hospitalized veterans and their dependents with steady work and resources.
The Carey High School Alumni plan a banquet and program at the Catholic hall on Thursday June 6 1939. Dinner will be served at 6 30 pm with dancing and entertainment to follow in the high school auditorium. Reservations are due by May 29 with Edgar Keller, and tickets can be saved at Houk's Hardware with Clayton Shaman, Bob Hack, Miss Ruth Riester, or Charles Long.
Mrs Paul Mecarthur expresses sincere thanks to all who sent flowers and cards during her recent illness.

At a Carey Community Chest executive committee meeting held Tuesday evening at the public library Rev Marion E. Tilns ler was re elected chairman and Mrs Richard Frederick chosen secretary treasurer to succeed Mrs Paul Potrell who had held the post for two years and served on the board three years The boys and girls activities report was approved The next executive board meeting is set for the last Thursday in September
Miss Caroline E Baker and Mr Robert H Cassidy wed in a Friday ceremony at the bride's home north of Carey. Rev H A Cassidy conducted the double ring rite. Attendants included Miss Marie Reed and Roger Cassidy. Bride graduated from Carey High School and Ohio State, and plans in nursing. The couple will reside at 439 King Ave Columbus.
The county W C C T U Institute will be held at the Evangelical church in Upper Sandusky on Friday afternoon and evening May 26. Australian lecturer Miss Houlder will speak in both sessions, discussing women and children's welfare, suffrage, world peace and world citizenship.
The Carey Townsend group will meet Monday at 8 oclock in the public building. A guest speaker from Finds will attend and there will be several speakers. A drawing for a gift will be held for all attendees.
A registered Percheron mare was sold to Ohio State University by A R Walter of 2% Mi es. The horse will be used this fall to train student judging teams at the university fairs and intercollegiate events.
