Dairy Day At Toledo State Hospital Showcases Local Students

Last Thursday seventeen boys from local agriculture classes with their teacher and four district patrons attended Dairy Day at Toledo State Hospital. The event, sponsored by the hospital and the Maumee Valley Holstein Club for Smith Hughes classes in Northwestern Ohio, featured talks by Prof Erf and L L Rummel, plus a milk presentation by Mrs Fiorence Heherdling. A morning judging contest awarded eight places with Carey earning third, Ralph Stark fourth, and Paul Reinhart fifth. Carey was the only school with multiple prizes.

Tractor overhaul by Chester Walter earns praise after initial starting difficulty

An agricultural engineering class completed a tractor overhaul owned by Chester Walter. Initial starting was difficult due to tight components, but after several hours of operation it now runs smoothly and starts readily.

Frances Puchta, Sophomore class, earns first prize of 3 dollars for Unseen Heart of Gold. Caroline Baker, Senior class, takes second with To Her Fathers Name and 2 dollars. Honorable mentions go to Doris Ruehle for A Thief of Bagdad and Margaret Haford for The Furrow. Eloise Bame and Millicent Warren served as judges.

The Home Economics club met last Thursday during activity period for a business session. Refreshments of ice cream and wafers were served.

Inter Class Tournament Finals Dominate School Sports

In the inter class tournament preliminaries Sophomores beat Juniors 26 to 6 in boys action while Seniors edged Freshmen 10 to 9. Girls preliminaries saw Sophomores beat Freshmen 21 to 6 and Seniors overwhelmed Juniors 32 to 4. Semis had Seniors over Parochial 39 to 8 and Juniors 16 Sophomores 15. Finals crowned Seniors champions in both boys 22 to 11 over Juniors and girls 40 to 21 over Sophomores, with strong late play sealing trophies for the Seniors.

Carey Faculty Outlasted by Upper Sandusky 30 to 28

Carey and Upper Sandusky played a tense faculty basketball game with close scoring. Laird led Carey in points while Raabe topped Upper, final score Upper 30 Carey 28 after a late tying sequence broke the deadlock.

Good Friday Service Unite Churches in Carey

On April 17 Christ Lutheran Memorial Evangelical and the Methodist churches join for a 1 30 to 3 o clock Good Friday worship at the Evangelical church. Three local ministers and three visiting pastors will deliver brief meditations on the Last Seven Sayings on the Cross accompanied by several musical numbers. The community showed strong support last year and organizers expect even greater interest this season.

Kiwanis Meeting Features Prof Hopkins Poems

Prof J A Hopkins head of Heidelberg University Tiffin speech read and interpreted poems by Tennyson Dunbar Riley among others at the Kiwanis luncheon. Student Mr Johnson from Heidelberg accompanied on piano and gave several brilliant numbers. Twenty seven members and guests attended.

Edward Charles Hill dies after illness in Carey Ohio

Edward Charles Hill died Tuesday morning at 3 45 at his home on South West Street after a year long illness with tuberculosis Two severe hemorrhages were the immediate cause of death The body was taken to the Goff funeral home and prepared for burial Funeral services will be held Thursday at Memorial Evangelical church with Rev G N Perkins of Upper Sandusky officiating Burial will be in Spring Grove cemetery He was born April 15 1902 in Wyandot County son of Charles Casper and Anna Opper Hill He would have been 27 years 11 months and 10 days old He married Hazel Iona Mick on June 26 1926 who survives Also surviving are his mother and father three brothers and three sisters George Lloyd and Ralph Hill Cleo Staver Mary Faber and Lillie Doppler all of Carey He was a miller by trade with Carey Mill and Elevator Co and lived in or near Carey most of his life The community mourns his untimely death.

Funeral for Joseph Wineland in Van Buren

Mrs Ida Cramer and Mr and Mrs Will Wright attended the funeral at the Presbyterian church in Van Buren for Joseph Wineland who died at 70 from apoplexy. His body was found in an orchard after his wife searched following a long absence. Attendees included Mrs C C Heck and Mrs Ross Patterson. Mrs Wineland is a half sister of Mrs David Heck of this town who is visiting California.

Balloon Messages Found Near Walter Farm

Sunday afternoon around 2:00 pm Park Walter and O P Thomas found three toy baloons in corn stubble three miles south of town. The balloons from Grand Rapids Michigan carried a small envelope with a card asking the finder to write to Albert Winters at Herpolsheimer Co Grand Rapids. One balloon had burst, likely causing descent.

New Riegel Bank Names Frank Wetzel as Cashier

Frank Wetzel of New Riegel is approved to become cashier of the New Riegel State Bank. He will join the bank in a few days and assume the post officially on May 1, succeeding Frank D Ward who resigns to become assistant cashier at the Tiffin Savings Bank.

Free Sewing Machine Clinic Planned by Ohio State

Mr Bardon of the extension department of Ohio State will conduct a free sewing machine clinic on Tuesday April 8 under Crawford Ridge Farm Bureau auspices. Fifteen machines will be taken apart cleaned adjusted and repaired for attendees. The clinic meets in the main on S Vance Street formerly the Helen Hat Shoppe.

Postal official inspects Columbus clerks in annual exam

A representative of the chief postal clerk's office in Columbus conducted the annual examination of clerks at the local office. John Jacoby and Charles Calmes were examined and the inspector studied the plan to route Vanlue to Carey mail by truck as a potential replacement for the Findlay Branch service.

Mrs Frank Ogg Taken to Hospital for Kidney Operation

Mrs Frank Ogg was taken to Grant Hospital in Columbus on Sunday for a kidney removal operation. Her husband and Mr and Mrs Ralph Ogg accompanied her, but the operation was postponed to a future date. Mr Ogg and their daughter Mrs Paul Sammet were with her on Wednesday.

Holy Week Observances at M. E. Church

Preparations for Holy Week are complete with services planned Tuesday to Thursday at the church. Good Friday union service at Evangelical church in the afternoon. Easter Sunday starts with a sunrise service and Lord's Supper. Church School at the usual hour with a short pageant. New members welcomed at morning worship. Byron Zuck Dies After Illness at Sister's Home

Milk House Burned on Irvin Wonder Farm

A milk house at the Irvin Wonder farm 1.5 miles west of town burned Saturday morning around daylight. The Carey fire department arrived after a passing motorist notified the family. Losses included a cream separator milking utensils and a 120 gallon gasoline tank with about 30 gallons burned. No explosion occurred and firemen reportedly saved the barn.

Weather shifts to snow and thaw amid lingering cold wind

A storm Tuesday brought snow onto a rain soaked region, coating streets with ice while the snow quickly melted Wednesday under a harsh cutting wind. Despite the thaw, residents hope for a milder April and May after a cold spell.
