Village Opens W Brown Ave After Deed Acceptance

Village council authorized opening W Brown Ave between Lake Street and the east alley after accepting a deed from Mrs. J B Ziebarth for a 50 foot strip. Mrs Ziebarth will be paid 300 toward sanitary sewer work, with 80 percent of costs covered by the village.

Fire Destroys Barn Near Adrian

A large barn on Mrs. Ethel Grine farm one mile east of Adrian burned Tuesday forenoon. Fire department saved a large shed with corn cribs. nine Holstein cows two calves and other livestock were lost or harmed. Hog herd evacuated and machinery survived. Tenant Melford Swinehart found the milking machine out of service then working again minutes before the blaze. Loss not yet estimated as of Wednesday.

Three Carey families plan home trades this Friday. Edward Bakies and family move from 139 West North to 612 West, a 7 room ranch built by Phil Lips. Bernard Kramer family relocates from the Ray Schindler farm to West North Street, owned by Irvin Yeater, while Phillips family moves into the vacated Kramer residence.

Wool incentive program eyes growers incentive and slips

April 1 marks the start of the wool incentive payment plan. Ohio official Frank N. Farnsworth urges growers to keep all 1955 clip sale slips noting date and quantity. Payments based on a fixed percentage of sale receipts, with eligibility limited to wool sold after Jan 1, 1955 and between April 1 1955 and March 31 1956, plus lambs and yearlings meeting criteria. Ownership proof required for lambs slaughtered after 30 days. Payments issued after March 31 1956 aiming at 62 cents per pound grease or 106 percent of Sept 15 1954 parity. Funds come from 70 percent tariff on imported wool. Goal is 300 million pounds annual U S wool production. current output around 230 million.

Billie Davis to Speak at Upper Sandusky High School

Carey Windstorm Causes Widespread Damage Across Ohio

The Tuesday windstorm caused extensive destruction in Carey and surrounding areas. A coal car derailed into town after being blown off tracks, trees toppled power lines, damaged homes, a barn, and a church hall. electricity and telephone service were disrupted for hours with several poles down and antennas blown away.

Carey Jaycees Purchase Stage Lighting With Minstrel Proceeds

The Carey Jaycees used minstrel show profits to buy a spotlight and two floodlights for the new school auditorium at a total cost of 252.50. Ticket sales from advance shows and door sales totaled 574.50, with Boy Scouts receiving 10 percent of advanced sales. Remaining funds boosted the Jaycees public service fund, and plans include a large Christmas tree for the library lawn.

Carey Board Sets New First Grade Entrance Age

The Carey Board of Education adopted a resolution requiring a child to be 6 years old on or before Nov 30 to enroll in first grade, replacing the previous Dec 31 cutoff. The change aligns with national practice and Wyandot county schools, which accept only students 6 by Oct 31. Authorities agree children should be more mature when entering elementary school.

Mayors Court Hears Six Cases In Town

Six cases were heard in Mayors court this week. James Belvin Bradner was fined 100 dollars plus 8.60 costs and 5 dollars doctors fee with four semi monthly payments and a mandatory three day jail term by Officers Tong and Orians. Owen J Roberts received a five dollar fine and 4.60 costs for stop sign violation. Souis Craft faced a 10 dollar fine and 8.60 costs for theft of gasoline from Shang's used car lot with a 30 day jail sentence suspended. Lyle Orians was fined 10 dollars and 8.60 costs for aiding and abetting theft with 30 day sentence suspended. David Miller of Upper Sandusky had 10 dollar fine and 4.60 costs for driving to the left of the yellow line. Calvin C Platt and another officer fined 10 dollars and 4.60 costs for no muffler.

Youth Award Honors Kind Deed to Animals

The American Veterinary Medical Association sponsors an annual Youth Award for a boy or girl under 18 who has performed an outstanding act of kindness to animals. Nominations due by May 1, 1955, to AVMA Chicago headquarters. The winner receives a framed certificate and a $100 savings bond, with the award announced at the AVMA convention in Minneapolis in August. Previous winners include youths who rescued dogs, protected show horses, and reduced calfhood injuries through humane pens.
