Graduates Mary Carolyn Stewart and Virginia Meek Return to Carey High

Mary Carolyn Stewart and Virginia Meek returned to Carey High School on Wednesday March 1 with Miss Mildred Jones and Miss Ruth Rees from Flower Hospital Toledo. They attended a film titled This Is America about nursing training and followed with a Q and A on nursing. Meek and Stewart have received their nurse caps and are progressing toward becoming skilled nurses.

Reports on religions by sociology class members

On Monday February 27 a sociology class presented brief reports on religions. Pauline West spoke on Mohammedanism, Dick McCleary on Buddhism, Persis Newhand on Confucianism, Pat Williams on Animism, and James Welly on Judaism. The reports clarified main beliefs and corrected misconceptions.

Carey High School Earns Ohio Industrial Arts Honor

Carey High School received a letter of congratulations and appreciation from Dewey F. Barich president of the Ohio Industrial Arts Association for superior work presented at the conference of industrial arts teachers in Columbus. Harry Klotz attended the meeting displaying many sheet metal projects including metal waste baskets mail boxes funnels and measuring cans for oil. The class showcased these items at the Community Institute held in the high school auditorium highlighting the students fine work.

Badminton Gains Ground In School Girls’ Classes

Interest grows in school badminton as girls buy rackets and form class tournaments ahead of a mixed doubles event in April under the G A A. The sport offers in-school play for all ages and will pair girls with boys as partners for the wider tournament.

Y Teen Meeting Teaches New Skills And Constitution Change

On March 6 the Y Teen met to learn new skills with guest speaker Miss Shook the home economics teacher. Sally Jaster chaired a session where Ferne Adelsperger Ruth Niederkehr and Patty Uipdegraff helped girls decorate handkerchiefs and try painting. About 20 girls attended and a proposed amendment to the Y Teen constitution was voted on during the meeting.

Trains Resume Schedules After Shortage

Passenger trains back on regular schedules after coal shortage. New York Central restored Florida Cincinnati night trains, Chesapeake & Ohio Sportsman line resumed weekend runs, with Carey departures at 2 p m and 12 15 p m for west and eastbound routes. Columbus Toledo and Toledo Columbus trains began first post shortage runs from Carey.

High School Orchestra and Band Concert Feature Evening Program

The high school orchestra and concert band perform Friday evening at 8 1 30. The orchestra opens with Sleeping Beauty Waltz Solider's Chorus from Maust and a selection from Il Travitore. The band features favorites like When Irish Eyes Are Smiling Memorials Stars and Stripes Forever and Southin Bread plus The Light Cavalry Overture. Admission remains free and the public is invited.

Robert Gatehel Injured in Sledding Accident at Keller's Dam

Robert Gatehel, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Gatehel of 153 Cleveland Avenue, sustained a head scalp wound Tuesday evening after a sled hit a dry spot at Keller's Dam near McCutchenville. He was unconscious briefly, treated at Find Hospital with no skull fracture, and returned home the same night. His brother James and several others were with him.

Susann Kin, 11, Struck By Polio in Seneca County

Susann Kin, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edmund Kin of west of New Riegel, was hospitalized in Toledo with poliomyelitis after two days of illness. Paralyzed in one leg and some back muscles, she remains in a reactive stage as temperatures drop. She is the sixth polio case in Seneca County this year, all in the western half, and relatives will send cards to Maumee Valley Hospital.

Brother and sister undergo emergency appendectomies

Eugene 18 and Annetta 16 Mietcher, children of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Mietcher, were rushed to Findlay hospital for emergency appendectomies within 25 hours this week. Eugene had surgery Sunday at 5 PM and Annetta Monday at 5 30 PM. both are recovering satisfactorily. The family moved from the farm east of Carey to Glen avenue, in a home formerly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Kernie Watson, after selling the property to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stansberry.
