Grove Walborn Sr. Dies at 87 in Carey

Grove H Walborn Sr aged 87 of S Muncie Street Carey died at 9 45 am March 11 at Indian Trail Nursing Home after two months illness. Born November 5 1880 in Carey son of Henry and Clarisa Walborn he married Elizabeth Shumaker in 1905. Surviving sons include Lewis Lawrence Grove Z Jr and Glenn Findlay with one son deceased and two grandchildren. Services 2 pm today at Goff Funeral Home. Rev Hubert Kobhjinski to officiate with burial in St Marys Cemetery.

Fortnightly Education Topic Explores Ohio Progress

Mrs. Grover Snyder presented Wisdom on a Blackboard on progress in Ohio education to the Fortnightly Club at Mrs. Carl Krout’s home. The talk traced Ohio schooling from Belpre 1789 to 5,071 schools and 2,350,000 students, plus diversified modern programs and federal aid under the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Carey Volunteer Firefighters Battle Repeated Grass Fires

The Carey Volunteer Fire Department tackled several grass fires with help from McCutchenville on March 6 at 4 10 pm on Bob Mott's property St. Rt. 53 with nine firefighters and no damage. A second blaze March 8 on Donald Donelson's grove Street site drew eleven firefighters with minimal impact. A third blaze caused by trash burning occurred March 11 at Carey Industries on West Street with one crew responding.

Carey High School seniors present the Western comedy Golden River on March 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The show, set on a ranch with a special chorus and square dance, features the Walsh family and marks the 1968 graduates final class production.

McCutchenville Plans Beef Supper Fundraiser

McCutchenville Community Baseball group met on Thursday February 29 to plan the second annual old Fashion Thrasher type all beef supper set for Saturday March 30 at the McCutchenville School. Supper begins at 4 30 p m pricing 175 for adults 100 for children. Lew Buckingham named supper chairman. Ohio Power installed new lights and field work progresses with completion expected by May 1st backed by a $10 000 project funded by community efforts.

Albert F. Mathias Taken by Death

Albert F. Mathias Route 1 died at 7 p.m. Thursday March 7 1968 at Wyandot Memorial Hospital after five weeks as patient. Born March 18 1892 in Seneca County he was the son of Louis and Margaret Mathias. He married Lucy Hoffbaur May 1 1917 who survives with daughters Martha Wank and Thelma Rose Bumb, son Herman, 16 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral was 9:30 a.m. Monday March 11 at St. Nicholas Frenchtown Church with Rev. Herbert Graf. burial in church cemetery. Bristol Funeral Home in charge.

Patricia Elwood Awarded Nationwide Beauty Scholarship

Miss Patricia Eileen Elwood a Carey Senior High School senior won a scholarship to Nationwide Beauty Academy in Columbus. She ranked among Ohio area finalists from over 450 applicants after a written application recommendations and an in depth interview. Elwood will gain training in hair styling coloring wig artistry makeup and shop management. She is the daughter of Rev and Mrs John H Elwood of 333 East Findlay Street.

Carey Mayor's Court Hears Multiple Traffic and Permit Violations

Francis McKernan of Carey fined ten dollars and costs for allowing a dog to run at large. Lester Keckler of Carey fined ten dollars and costs for playing cards after 11 pm. Gary Burrill of Carey forfeited twenty dollars bond for driving left of center. Charles Kessler aged 19 of Muncie Street fined twenty five dollars plus costs for reckless operation and speeding with license suspended 30 days. Neil Williams of Carey forfeited twenty five dollar bond for disobeying a red signal. William Walter of Carey fined ten dollars and costs for reckless operation.
