Carey Kiwanis Meets in Carey Discusses Agriculture Program

The Carey Kiwanis club held its regular meeting at Trubey's restaurant. President Earl Burson highlighted Kiwanis International's three fold community agricultural plan including soil erosion computation, sustainable farming, and new farm product markets. Guests Lt. James Logsdon and Wilfrid Logsdon attended, with service members sharing wartime experiences. Next week’s program is planned and all members are urged to attend.

Son of West Carey Couple Faces Broken Jaw in England

Cpl. John Lauden Slager 23, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Lauden Slager of west of Carey, is stationed in England and recently sustained a broken left jaw while serving as a mechanic and electrician in the air corps on B 17 bombers. He is the fifth family member hospitalized in recent months.

Brothers Meet In South Pacific Reunion At Sea

Eugene Lab and Cecil Lab, sons of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Lab of W North Street, reunited after nearly three years as their ships docked in a Pacific port. They spent five hours together on May 31 and four hours on June 1. They wrote a letter home and Cecil met war correspondent Ernie Pyle before his death, cherishing a $20 bill autographed by Pyle.

SGT LEO VAUGHN AWARDED BRONZE STAR

Leo Vaughn son of Mr and Mrs W A Vaughn east of Carey was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic action near Conthil France on 12 November 1944. After a direct hit disabled his tank destroyer Vaughn helped wounded crew to aid stations carrying the last man one hundred yards under enemy fire.

Plane Collision Tells of Lt Byers Missing In Germany

Sgt Francis Tolan of Centerville Pa, a B 17 tail gunner, relays collision over Germany on January 10 1945. Lt John Byers co pilot was missing after his plane was hit. seven crew bailed out and were captured, Byers believed prisoner or dead until later liberation clarified he was not heard from.

Corporal Ralph Karcher Receives Philippine Liberation Ribbon

Corporal Ralph Karcher of the 592nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment has been awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two battle stars for his service in Leyte and Luzon. He also earns the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with battle star after 27 months in the Pacific. His wife Alma and mother Mrs. Anna M. Karcher live near Carey, Ohio.

Purple Heart Awarded to Mervin Snyder in Germany

Mr and Mrs Lester Snyder of eight miles south of Carey received a Purple Heart for their son Pfc Mervin Snyder wounded in action in Germany during February. He is twenty years old and his parents have not received details about the nature of his wounds. The Snyder family formerly resided in Carey.

The Sandusky county farm wage board sets rates for 1940 work in Fremont area fields. Mexican field hands receive 50 cents an hour. prisoners are paid the same. Other wages include 10 cents per tomato hamper, 2 cents per cherry, 50 cents per hour for hoeing and potato work, 3 dollars per acre for combining wheat and oats, 4 dollars per acre for soy beans, and 4 dollars per ton for baling hay and straw.

Mrs. S. B. Kloepfer of south of Carey sent four odd eggs to The Times. The shells were rough and uneven with a daisy imprint at each end. The eggs came from a two year old White Rock hen.
