Mervin Shafer Dies Suddenly at 75 in Carey

Mervin Di Shafer 75 of 704 W Lindsay Street was found dead at his farm on Route Two Carey Friday June 7 at 4 p m from a heart attack. A WWI veteran and former Carey village councilman he helped start a garage on North Vancey Street in the 1930s and later formed a corporation with E B Keller and Kermit Peterson. He married Corine Wenner in 1920 and is survived by his wife two brothers a sister three nephews and a niece. Funeral services were held June 10 at Goff Funeral Home with Pastor George Cressman Sr. officiating and Spring Grove Cemetery interment.

University President Delivers Keynote at Alumni Dinner

Dr. Samuel L. Meyer, president of Northern University, spoke at a June 5 fundraiser for Ohio Northern alumni in Wyandot County at Shrine Cafeteria Carey. Loren Schoenberger hosted the dinner. the drive aims to raise 6 910 000 by the 1971 centennial to fund new law and engineering facilities, a science wing, and debt on the pharmacy building. Ohio Northern serves 2 200 students in liberal arts engineering pharmacy and law.

A Wharton youth sustained injuries after a 8:44 p m Sunday crash on E Findlay Street near the railroad tracks. Victims include William Tyswick and Bohlen Wharton. Bohlen’s 1966 Bridgestone motorcycle and a 1965 Chevy pickup were damaged in the incident.
