Retreat Ends Friday at Shrine Retreat

Twenty seven Franciscans continue the second and final week of a retreat at the Shrine off Our Lady of Consolation for Friars of the Province of Our Lady of Consolation. Retreat Master is Rev. Beware of Dangerous Petitions Circulating in Ohio

Voters are warned that petitions are being circulated in many counties in Ohio to secure names for two proposed amendments. One would create pensions Ohio cannot pay and the other would reapportion the legislature to favor cities over rural districts. Voters should refuse to sign either petition.

Romig Family Holds First Reunion at S M Romig Home

The descendants of John and Elizabeth Romig gathered at S M Romig’s west of Carey for their first reunion. Fifty two relatives attended from Carey Fostoria Lima Tiffin McCutcheonville Bellevue and Arcadia. Mr and Mrs J F Peter of Fostoria attended among other guests. Mr Peter is the brother of the late Mrs John Romig and is the only living uncle of S M Romig and his sister.

Parishes Join Novena of Peace at Shrine

The parishes St. Marys of Caraghar St Elizabeths Richfield Center St Josephs Maumee St Richards Swanton and St Caspars Wauseon will join a two week novena for peace at Our Lady of Consolation Shrine. Services begin 2 30 p m Sunday July 28 and will be led by their pastors.

Rag sewing meeting for blind soldiers home rugs

The WC TU will meet with Mrs. George Krider on Thursday afternoon July 18 to sew carpet rags for the blind at the soldiers' home in Dayton. Donations of silk hosiery and untorn silk and cotton materials are appreciated for weaving into rugs by the “boys.”

Injured in Fall At Columbus Plant

Earl F Cline, local manager of Smith Agricultural Chemical Co. on West Findlay Street, suffered painful bruises Friday afternoon after falling from a box car at the Columbus plant. He returned home that evening with his wife and their two sons, Earl and Earl, who were visiting Columbus friends.

The annual Synod of Ohio summer school of the United Lutheran Church will run July 21 to 28 at Lakeside. Leadership, missions and music classes join daily assemblies. Toledo Mid-summer Fiesta Attendees See Rio Rita

Mr and Mrs George Snyder and family plus other Snyder relatives attended the Mid-summer Fiesta for Scottish Rite members in Toledo. The group enjoyed a Walbridge park picnic supper then watched Rio Rita by the Toledo civic opera association. Big Guns Move West On New York Central Freight

Four large artillery pieces traveled through Northwestern Ohio on a westbound New York Central freight train. Each gun filled an entire railcar and was reported to be shipped from the U S Erie Ordnance Depot near Port Clinton to National Guard units in western states. The guns measured about 22 feet in length.

Funeral for Mrs Kingsley Brewster Attended by Kin

Mr and Mrs Herbert Newhard and daughter Miss Carolyn, Mrs Walter Dible and Mrs Paul Kauffman attended the funeral of Mrs Kingsley Brewster. The service was held Friday afternoon from the J S Grove home in Findlay. Mrs Brewster was a niece of Mrs Newhard.

Archery Class and School Sports Update at Carey

The handicraft class grew popular with boys stringing bows and finishing initial bow stages. Carey’s grade school softball team beat Upper Sandusky 24 to 10 away and 19 to 7 at home, with Dallas Bland Frank Heck Stanley Pieranunzio and Pate Brooks shining infield and D Bland Amos Black Wendell Myers Charles Tucker and Donald Yingling belting home runs. Saint Vincent's Hospital Fire Sends 197 Patients to Safety

Police and Catholic priests helped evacuate 197 patients from a burning wing of St. Vincent's hospital to a fireproof section as the blaze was brought under control within an hour. Twenty fire companies fought the flames starting at midnight. two firefighters were overcome by smoke but recovered. No other injuries reported. Building damage estimated at 25 000 dollars, mainly from water. More than 10 000 onlookers gathered as patients were moved to safety. Fire began in a third floor laboratory.

Sales Tax Supervisor Appointed For 1940 Reports

Harold Dornbirer of Bucyrus is appointed to fill the sales tax supervisor role replacing Claire Gibson of Upper Sandusky. He will assist vendors at the Carey Public Library on July 19 20 24 and 25 to help file their 1940 sales tax reports.

Carey Board Sells Two School Buildings and Land

The Carey board of education sold the Springville school building to John Fredritz for 235 dollars. Leon Mathias bought the land under the building for 38 dollars. A J Kinney bought the Adrian school building and grounds for 250 dollars.

St Peters Church to Celebrate Diamond Jubilee and Pick New Teacher

St Peters Catholic church located 1 3 miles northeast of Alvada will hold its annual social Sunday July 21 marking the churchs Diamond Jubilee. The Carey board of education has selected Miss Helen Keffer of Columbus as physical education teacher replacing Miss Alice Harding. Mrs Keffer recently graduated from Cantal university and will be assigned European theory and public speaking.
