Chapel Program Promotes 1929 Yearbook Subscriptions

The annual staff conducted a Monday chapel to promote the yearbook. Editor Lester Smiley and business manager Dorotha Mitchell spoke briefly about the 1929 yearbook. Music by the high school orchestra and Louise Van Buren featured vocals for audience outreach.

Chief Strongheart, star of Cecil DeMille era films, presents a dramatic interpretive program on the life of the Native American. He travels from Los Angeles for a Monday evening appearance with companions Tyrone Power and others. Carey High School Notes And Plans For Upcoming Games

The student council discusses a Welcome sign for visiting teams and potential party plans. Maurine Moyer is absent due to illness. Thomas Hilly left Carey High to attend a Lansing high school. The Junior class serves lunch with vegetable soup, crackers, meat sandwiches, fruit and milk. Grade cards will reflect the first semester’s work.

Careys and Wharton teams fall short in Friday games

Friday evening the Good Ship C. H S. docked at Wharton and two Carey teams faced defeats in the W. H. S. auditorium. The Wisconsin Whirl overwhelmed the girls 49 to 14 while the Carey girls struggled on a unfamiliar big floor. The Carey boys also lost 14 to 24 as Salem teams prepare to visit next Friday for a doubleheader.

Relic Timepiece From Liverpool Linked to Starr Family

A 125 year old patent level jeweled key winder watch by M. J. Tobias of Liverpool has a gold face with a carved rural scene. It passed from William Starr to his son George Starr and then to Mrs. Eakin. After being unused since Starr’s death, Mr. Eakin loosened a tight screw and the watch resumed running accurately.

Beano Party at Parish Hall Next Monday Night

Beano event on Monday January 28 at the Parish Hall invites all county residents. Admission 10 cents covers the first game with prizes up to five dollars. Music dancing and Christian Mothers sandwiches follow. A $50 diamond ring will be given away.

Buckskin deed tied to Mann land near Stringtown Salem

A nearly century old buckskin deed shows transfer of 99.85 acres from the United States to John B. Mann, grandfather of Minor Mann. The land lies a mile south of Stringtown in Salem within Crawford county. Dan Maxwell of Kirby holds the property.

I M Keller reports Jacob Keller of Peabody Kansas died after severe injuries from a fall down church basement steps weeks ago. His funeral was held Sunday as he never regained consciousness.

Fox Buys 97 Acre Farm in Ur bana Area

M. P. Fox, second trick operator at Hockings Valley station, has purchased a 97 acre farm near Ur bana, his boyhood home. The farm was formerly owned by Margaret Meredet and Anna Nagle. Fox already held 20 acres in the locality.

Hold Up at Kerr Street Grocery Nabs $28

S B Beitler of Columbus, clerk at W and Motean’s on Kerr Street, was robbed Friday at 6 30 am. A burly negro with a revolver demanded money while a second man waited outside. Beitler, deaf, reached for his counter and lost a pocket book containing 28 dollars. the bag was later found in an adjoining yard. Beitler had earlier run a store at South and Vance streets.

Carl Krout quits his clerk post at Frederick's Grocery and moves to Arlington to work as a salesman for his brother Dale at the Ford agency. He plans to relocate his family soon but no house is currently available.

Mrs. R. E. Gilliland of southwest of town traveled to Findlay on Tuesday where her sister Mrs. Nellie Still of Fostoria underwent an operation at the Home and Hospital. Also with Mrs. Still were Mrs. Stanley Smith of Fostoria and Mr. and Mrs. Willis Breitigam of Bascom.

Infant dies at birth for Newhard family

A 10-pound son born to Mr. and Mrs George Newhard last Thursday morning died at birth. Short funeral services were held at 3 o clock with Rev. Paul R. Clouser in charge. Burial followed in Spring Grove cemetery.

Car in Ditch Injures Occupants North of Town

Saturday James Wiley's Chevrolet touring car ran into a ditch on Route 238 north of town. Several occupants were bruised and cut while the car was badly damaged. It was towed to Stowe Motor Sales for repair.

Death of Michael Spangler in Findlay road area

Michael Spangler died Friday afternoon after a week long illness with pneumonia. Funeral Sunday at the home with Rev Duton and Rev Kern officiating. Burial in Bigelow cemetery. Spangler was born July 26, 1840 in Pennsylvania and died at 88. He lived 67 years in the area and was a former blacksmith and oil and gas contractor. He served 25 years as justice of the peace. He married Maggie Laudenslager and later Sarah Angeline Aigler. two daughters survive along with five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Three brothers also survive.

Carl Kemmerley and William Barrett on 12 day leaves from the Great Lakes naval training school at Chicago spent about 10 days at Henry Kemmerley’s home south of town arriving Friday. The two young men joined the navy six weeks ago.

Auto swap ends with wild theft and chase

A Whiles Overland employee swapped a broken Chevy for a Stearns Knight valued at about 6000 and drove to Columbus for an auto show feature. Theft occurred near a shrine. the thief escaped in a hurry. The stolen Chevy had ties to Findlay, where a paroled convict previously worked and then fled with a car.

Carey Branch Dairy Association Meets Preservation of Prosperity

About 175 members of the Carey Branch of the North Central Ohio Cooperative Dairy Sales Association gathered at Gottfried's hall for the annual meeting. The auditor's report was approved, highlighting a prosperous year. Trustees reelected included Wenner, Dow, Baker, and Powell. The program featured music and recitations by local performers and a violin and piano duet. Refreshments were served and square dances followed with Mrs. Ralph Brown at the piano and callers Wenninger and Suber.

Funeral services for M. A. Thornton were held last Thursday at his Dow street home with Rev. Paul R. Clouser officiating. A quartet provided music. burial followed in Spring Grove cemetery with Earl Green Post American Legion pallbearers and firing squad.
