The Rev Dr Donald Cryer returns to Carey for a Sunday 10 oclock service at First Methodist Church with the message Our Witness in the World. Cryer led Carey ministry 1940 to 1943 and later served Findlay Toledo and other Ohio churches.
The Carey Comprehensive Plan traces early settlement from 1819 near Crawford, Judge John Carey’s cabin, and Indian treaty movements. Railroads fueled growth from 1838, oil booms with 700 wells in 1900s, and industries like lime, porcelain, rubber, wood goods, and deodorants shaping Carey’s economy.
Carey Volunteer Fire Department responded to a New Year’s Eve fire near E Findlay Street. They saved an automobile owned by William Conley from total destruction after a smoldering cigarette fell on the rug. Interior damage only with an estimated loss of $100.
The Carey Adult Farmers Class will meet next Thursday January 13 at 8 pm in the vocational agriculture room at Carey High School. The nutrition topic focuses on swine feeding with Milton Kalm of Sandusky as resource person. Refreshments served. all farmers invited to attend.
The Goodwill Truck will be in Carey on Monday January 10 to collect donated items. Call Mrs. John Walters at 396 4491 with belongings to donate.
Last Friday December 31 Alvin E Reinhart drove north on Patterson Street failing to stop for a red light. His 1963 Mercury hit a 1963 Chevrolet pickup owned by J F Dible and driven by Dennis Dible. The Mercury spun and hit a parked 1961 Ford at Lanning Motor Sales causing $400 damage to the truck and $65 to the Ford. Roger Mullholand skidded on a wet Findlay Street while in a 1963 Chevrolet and struck a New York Central flasher unit with $300 and $125 damage respectively. Edward Welker in a 1960 Pontiac hit a parked 1963 Chevrolet at the curb by Carl Conley causing $45 to the Pontiac and $10 to the Conley car.
The Carey Board of Education offers an evening sewing class for beginners starting Thursday Jan 13. Open to students and adults with a 6 week span from 7 to 9 pm, maximum 12 participants, minimum 8 to proceed. Fee is $6. contact Miss Jennie Steen by Jan 10. Also an EUCHRE TOURNAMENT at the American Legion starts Mon Jan 17 at 7 pm with public sign up.
The Carey Village Council, in its first meeting, elected John Windau as council president after Jack Ball nominated him. Mayor Peiffer outlined acting mayor powers and appointments included F. K. Cassel as Village Solicitor and new fund assignments for Firemen and Police. Ordinances 602 and 603 creating the village administrator post were passed, with George Dunn named Village Administrator.
Brian Vaughn a Casia High School senior in the Tulsa area is hospitalized at Baptist Memorial with a broken back after an auto crash on December 26. He was a guest of a classmate when two carloads followed and forced them off the highway. the other boys were uninjured.
The annual meeting of Peoples Bank shareholders in Carey Ohio will elect directors and address other business. It will take place January 12 1966 at the bank office between 10 and 11 a.m. President O C Trwining and Secretary C Cassel sign. Also a basketball game Friday with Buckeye Central at Wyandot on Route 30 Bucyrus side.
A 15 year old Carey High School freshman will face petty larceny charges after allegedly stealing 10 model cars, trucks, and tractors from Harry's Pharmacy on E Findlay Street. The total value is listed at five dollars and the case has been sent to the Wyandot County prosecutor in Upper Sandusky for filing.
The New Riegel Telephone Company assets were sold to Ohio Bell in 1958 and a final $1610 distribution was made to 230 stockholders at $7 each. After costs, remaining funds go to the New Riegel School for the new high school bond effort. Rev Earl Newberg notes Crawford Board’s January meeting is canceled. District Evangelism Rally set for Thursday at 7:30 PM in Bowling Green with Dr Emerson Dolaw as speaker.
A jury is to be selected in the second degree manslaughter trial of Edward A. Swick 47 Carey for the Sept 11 1965 traffic death of Ralph Ray Brooks 29 of 213 Cherry St Brooks died after his motorcycle struck Swicks auto at the N Main Cross and East Streets intersection Police report state Swick was westbound on Main Cross and turned left into the path of the eastbound motorcycle Dr R E Nelson Hancock County Deputy Coroner ruled the death a brain concussion on shock
Carey Police report arrest of Lonnie Tanner of Diana West Virginia on New Year’s Eve after a man was found with a back stab wound. Tanner, held for extradition to West Virginia, was questioned at 2 p m and treated for the wound before jail.
