In an all school assembly Mr Mulholland led devotionals from Luke 2 1 13. Freshman and senior girls tied 4 4 in basketball before boys volleyball and a fast hockey game. Mrs Raina Boycheff spoke on her Bulgarian Armenian background with wool spinning and needlework before a county basketball tournament heats in Carey this week with games Tue Wed Fri Sat and no games Thu.
Local basketball star Reid Burson tore a ligament in his left ankle during practice last week. He later improved and did not need his crutches this week.
Dixon's Sepia Swingsters from Cleveland will perform at Healey's Tavern on the Carey Fostoria road each Saturday and Sunday night. The band rose from the Blackstone club and has radio and phonograph experience. There is no cover charge at Healey's.
Contracts awarded for a new front on the Economy Store at E Findlay street where the Ogg room previously stood. The front features mottled glazed tile and a center street level entrance, with Snyder Lumber Co. handling the construction.
Mr and Mrs Maine Brininger relocate their dry cleaning business to a room in the Keller block on E Findlay street. The shop was previously located across the street in the Jacob room.
A meeting of the Past Chiefs of the Pythian Sisters is set for 2:00 PM on Thursday afternoon March 6.
The Farmers and Sportsmen Protective Association met at the old town hall to launch an active membership drive. Dues are $1.00 annually for sportsmen. farmers may join free. Former members are invited to rejoin, with permanent membership cards to be mailed soon. Highteen ring-neck cock pheasants were purchased and released near Carey after arriving from Hillcrest Game Farm. The association reported receipts from hunting and fishing licenses totaling 392.02 with 119.81 on hand after expenses including pheasant rearing, leases, wardens, traps, and signs.
The Mission Renewal at Our Lady of Consolation Shrine runs March 2 to 9. Regular Sunday hours apply with a 7:30 p.m. service on March 2. Weekday Masses are 5:30 6:15 and 8:15 a.m. with 6:00 a.m. and post 8:15 Mass instructions. Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament at 7:30 p.m. nightly. Rev Claude Mussell will conduct the renewal.
The first quarterly distribution of 1941 school foundation program funds totals $10,659,231, certified by Education Director E. N. Dietrich for cities counties and exempted villages. Carey receives $6,819, with Bellefontaine, Kenton, Ada, and Upper Sandusky also listed, plus Hardin Logan and Wyandot counties allocated amounts.
M. D. Shafer, commander of Earl Green Post No. 344 American Legion, announced about 75 percent of local ex service men registered Saturday in the nationwide home defense service drive. Some who missed registration are expected to complete it by week’s end. Forms were available at Shaffer’s Garage and Krupp’s Harness Shop.
Methodists urge a Good Samaritan offering at church on Sunday as part of a million dollar drive for boys in army camps overseas relief and aiding missions of British Methodism stalled by the war. Local emergency committee includes Rev. Donald W. Cryer pastor Mrs. S. R. Bamne C. W. Lanning C. J. Jenkins and Elsie Sturgeon.
O O C Kohli of Lima division engineer for the state highway department was in town this week conferring with Carey officials about widening and resurfacing N. Vance street. Indications are that this improvement may be started soon.
A blaze destroyed the Ralph Heck family home two miles northwest of Carey Saturday night after the Heck household noted a fire in an upstairs room. The wind from the southwest fanned the flames, which gutted the house and its contents except about 200 dollars in furniture. Firemen arrived around 8 pm and kept the remaining structures from burning. Loss is estimated at 4000 dollars for the house and 2500 dollars for furniture and equipment, partly insured. The family plans to replace the home and are temporarily staying with relatives while Ruth splits time between two households.
A 6 pound daughter born Tuesday morning to Mr and Mrs Loren Gililand on Portland road near Tiffin. An 8 pound son born February 10 to Dr and Mrs D R Printz of Ada in Memorial hospital Lima named Don Warren. Mrs Printz formerly Millicent Warren taught six years at Carey high school. A 90 pound son born Tuesday morning to Mr and Mrs Howard Musgrave four miles northeast of Carey.
Yesterday marked Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent with mass followed by ashes. The Church of Our Lady of Consolation held blessing with ashes and evening devotions at 7 30, with rosary sermons and benediction. During Lent every Friday at 7 30 there will be the Way of the Cross and Benediction.
Revival services began last Sunday at Beech Grove United Brethren Church near Carey with daily 7 30 p m services except Saturday. Pastor Rev W S Spring preaches with Albert Titus of East Liberty to assist on March 3 Titus a pianist and accordion soloist everyone invited to attend.
The Heck family thanks neighbors friends and the Carey fire department for staying all night and saving the other buildings. Police officer Henry Pieracini directed traffic past the farm.
Mrs Frederick Sopher is home on Worello street after nine days in Findlay hospital. Doctors found she had streptococcio bronchitis since January 16 and she is now able to receive visitors.
Hautotck lodge of Findlay will exemplify the third degree on Thursday evening February 27. All members are urged to attend.

Miss Cora Ellen Schira of Carey accepts a secretarial position in the Farm Security Administration office at Upper Sandusky. A Carey High School graduate class of 1939, she studied executive secretarial work at Tiffin University, where she is a senior. She was active in Alpha Iota sorority Ty stenac staff Delta Literary Society Archery and Riding clubs. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J A Schira of E Findlay Street.
Wyandot county draft officials released the March 7 call list including Ray Grummel Everhart Gary Bardon Richard Don ald Robert Rinehart Garnett Eigene Sayre Dale Culver Orrin Lust Homer Muir and William Kraus as alternate An additional March 15 call is planned Four more names Myron Armstrong Berkley Dale Kissling Vincent Brown Virgil Orians are slated for Friday Alt Thomas Leonard named as another alternate The county aims to have 51 enlisted after these calls and has added new acceptances Curtis Jurey joins volunteers list and Wilbur Murray has been transferred to an Arkansas camp totaling 39 accepted so far.
This week the newspaper publishes a list of addresses for Carey young men in military training. If an address is missing it will be printed later or when received. changes of address will be published upon transfers to new camps.
Carey Garn fell from a lime car while working at National Lime & Stone Co and injured his spine. He was taken to Windlay hospital by Goff's ambulance for observation and x ray. Family visits followed as he remains under care with home return expected later in the week.
The Glen Gault home on Grove Street sold to J L Fox of south of Carey. The Richard Smith house on Findlay Street sold to John Wickiser. Both transactions handled by John Risner, area real estate broker.
Sergeant Daryl Moyer, son of Dr and Mrs F L Moyer of Carey, transfers from Patterson Field Dayton to Bowman Field Louisville Ky where he serves as a weather forecaster at the station.
The Carey Philharmonic Society will meet for rehearsal at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening March 4 in the Pythian hall. All members are urged to attend.
A pinochle session at Castle Hall Monday night drew sharp competition with a good turnout for the next session set for March 3. Justus Lodge held its Tuesday meeting with refreshments after the business portion and Knight rank conferred. Several candidates will receive Page rank on March 4 and Knights of Pythias are asked to attend the Sycamore county meeting at Castle Hall Thursday at 7 p.m. P. C. Goff, C. C.
A prize winning freak from the Carey Community Institute is shown at The Carey Times office. Entered by Dale Lowery of Carey, the odd egg features a White Rock hen laid shell containing a normal egg inside. The outer shell measures about 7.5 inches by 9.0 inches.
Mrs Mary Stroup and daughter Miss Betty attended with Mrs Alice Swihart Mrs Ruby Criger of Carey and Mrs Harold Hendricks with daughter Betty Ann and Mrs Edith Hosbury of Toledo. The capping exercises were held at St Pauls Methodist church Toledo Sunday evening. Miss June Criger, daughter of Mrs Ruby Criger and a Flower hospital student nurse, received her cap.
The Philathea class of Memorial Evangelical Sunday school will enjoy a social meeting at the home of Mrs Charles Cross on S Vance Street Tuesday evening. Assisting hostesses will be Mrs A H Green, Mrs Mae Pierce, Mrs Gertrude Tate, Mrs C M Powell, Mrs F E Phillips, Mrs Bertha Crumline, and Mrs Charles Lindower.
A regular Victory class of the Methodist Sunday school will meet Wednesday evening in the home of Mrs Ralph Sturgeon on W Findlay Street. Mrs Forrest Baker assists the host, and Mrs Willis Wonder leads the devotionals.
Miss Martha Jane Keller begins work at the Modern Beauty Shop on March 1 with her sister Mrs George Dunn. Keller is a recent graduate of the Marion School of Beauty Culture.

The Carey Community Institute last Friday and Saturday at the high school auditorium drew larger attendance and more exhibits. State speakers Mrs. Bell and Mr. Mattern praised the school band. Saturday’s program provided strong entertainment. Attendees offered constructive criticism to shape a stronger institute next year. The executive committee was enlarged with representatives from churches, schools, youth groups, home councils, business, farms, and local government. New officers were elected: Chairman L. O. Pratt, Vice-Chairman Ralph Derr, Secretary-Treasurer Mrs. Evert Lee, hosts Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Wonder, and an expanded executive committee including Rev. Donald W. Cryer and others.
Rev Asa A. Mattern of Fredericksburg and Mrs Fred Bell of Canton delivered strong talks at several sessions. Local talent produced outstanding numbers, adding value to the program offerings.
A Saturday program showcased two one act comedies with local performers led by Mrs Ervin Wentling and Miss Mary McBurney. During Too Antique For Anything a fire at the Ralph Heck home interrupted the show causing Mrs Heck to collapse. cast members carried on as the scene moved on.
