Carey Community Institute grapples with attendance and leadership changes
Attendance at four sessions last week reached 2411 down from 2807 in 1955. Dale Thomas elected president for 1957, with C. A. Yeoman as vice president and Mrs. Reid Heck as secretary treasurer. Host couple chosen, program featured student performances from West School and Col. Crawford Building, with Dr. Tennyson Guyer and Rev. Philip Shober as speakers. Thursday's events faced freezing rain and strong music by the Motors Mutual Chorus, plus arts awards and a Mayor for a Day playlet. Contributions from local businesses funded the event for the first time in years.

Students showcase art with popular vote in adult division
Come Unto Me by Mrs Roy Altwater won the adult division popular vote with nine human figures in a large oil. Farm Scene by Mrs S W McChesney placed second in popular choice. Hangman's Cottage by William Montague was close. Ballerina by Sibyl Wentling delighted observers in pastel in the students' division. Other exhibitors included Mrs A E Donelson Mrs W W Clark Miss Lucille DeVene and Mrs Eugene Ortans. CERAMICS featured about 30 pieces by Mrs Samuel Gunther Mrs George Pickens and Mrs L N Zahn with a standout unglazed maroon horsehead planter by Mrs Gunther.

Mr and Mrs George Bullock donated their domesticated red fox named Foxy to the Toledo Zoo from their home at 516 North Vance Street. They bought Foxy in North Baltimore about a year ago when she was a month old and she often escaped but returned to her pen. Zoo officials welcomed the donation and the Bullocks noted they lacked adequate facilities to keep her. Foxy and Mrs Bullock’s photo appeared in the Toledo Blade Sunday edition.

Carey Board Adopts New Teacher Salary Schedule
The Carey Board of Education approved a new salary schedule effective September 1 1956 with an annual increase of at least 200 for all teachers. The action follows the new foundation program law requiring minimum salaries. The board also approved baseball as the spring 1956 sport and anticipates at least one and a half mills more operating millage. Mrs T Benton Peery will finish the year for Mrs Victor Dunn and begin teaching February 27.

The Smith Agricultural Chemical Co of Columbus expands plant activity with the Carey division becoming a wholesale Sacco distributor effective Monday. Superintendent W W Clark will travel to reach customers in Northwestern Ohio as part of three sales territories. The plant 4 miles north and a half mile west of Route 23 previously handled humus processing as the Organic Products Division.

Swan Rubber Expands Carey Plant Production Capacity
Swan Rubber Co plans a cement block addition at its Carey plant measuring 62 by 102 feet for a new compounding and mixing unit powered by four 500 hp motors doubling capacity. The current unit will move into the new room next August. Employment is expected to rise 25 percent as production grows. A plastics building with nine molding machines is now in operation.

The Wings Over Jordan Choir, a 37 member Negro choir famed from CBS radio, will perform Friday at 8 p.m. in Carey High School auditorium sponsored by local churches. The group toured with World War II troops in Europe and Asia and will be on a goodwill tour to promote racial harmony. Admission is free with a freewill offering.
