Weeks after an outbreak at West Elementary and later in the Gol Crawford building attendances returned to normal. Mumps measles and flu affected the system but overall school attendance stayed under 10 percent. The high school maintained strong attendance and no closures were needed.
Girls at the Y Teen participate in Secret Sister Week drawing names to give 10 cent gifts daily. Messengers carry clues and the mystery sister reveal occurs Monday night at a party.
A strong turnout attended the Hi-Y meeting Monday night. After the business portion, members debated the topic Girl and Boy Relations with boys asking questions and sharing opinions.
February 3 closure announced for Washington's birthday observance. With the 32nd on a Sunday, many schools statewide shift the holiday to Monday February 3.
The Carey Doaral of education met in special session with Architect John Keil of Lima. A Wyandot county surveyor helper completed a site survey to settle technical problems before final location plans. Bids could be received in about four months with 90 days for plans and three weeks to advertise bids.
The district Solo and Ensemble contest will be at Tiffin on March 21 and the district Band contest at Hopewell-London on March 21. The state Solo and Ensemble contest will be at Bowling Green on April 11 and the state Band contest at Columbus on April 18. Excellent district ratings qualify for state, with two firsts in district earning a state berth at Columbus.
The Carey F H A chapter sponsored a high school Sweetheart dance in the auditorium last Thursday. The program included vocal duets by Dortha and Evelyn Wilson and by Phyllis Vaughn and Dortha Wilson, a piano solo by Jeannine Brown, a tap dance by Eileen Mott, and group singing.
The annual Carey Community Institute will be held February 19 and 20 at the high school auditorium with afternoon and evening sessions both days. Speakers include Mrs. George L. Peters and Rev. Raymond K. Beals. The program lists addresses, solos, banter, and door prize drawings, with a home art entry deadline this afternoon.
Miss Hilda Rall of Upper Sandusky is appointed by the board of governors as Wyandot Memorial hospital superintendent effective February 15. She had served as acting superintendent the past month and follows Miss Virginia McQueen who resigned January 15. Rall, a Mt. Carmel School of Nursing graduate, has been at the hospital since February 1, 1961.
Four local churches plan World Day of Prayer Friday at 2 PM in Memorial Church. The theme Walk as Children of Light originates in Africa this year and each church's missionary society president will lead their part. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.
The Carey Blue Devils defeated Norwalk St. Pauls 60 to 8 Tuesday night in the Fremont tournament and advance to Friday’s final against Fremont St. Josephs. The winner and runner up advance to the district tourney in Fremont next week. Norwalk defeated Gibsonburg in the semifinals.
The Crawford chapter No. 168 of the Order of the Eastern Star meets at 7 30 Friday evening February 20. Mrs Gerald Rickle associate matron reports on the 20th District association meeting at Shelby February 4. Albert Hutchinson of Woodville was discharged from Fremont Memorial Hospital after a fracture from an automobile accident on October 11. He can walk with a cane and resides at Bowling Green Rest Home. He is the grandfather of Mrs. Wilford Shuman.

At the Carey municipal meeting, Acting Mayor Charles Gibbins read Treasurer reports as Feighner Co of Fremont won the bid $745.60 to repair the 175000 gallon standpipe and weld interior surfaces at 3.20 per foot plus rivet head and tack weld costs. Work starts March 1949 after prior exterior coat. Eight bidders were invited. Feighner beat four others. Bicycle licensing will cost $231 for two years, with $160 in receipts. the budget allows offsetting the $71 shortfall. The street crew, led by Howard Ritter, has replaced about 100 concrete water meter tops with steel tops from Ford Meter Box Co, installed mainly in the southeast area.

On February 12, Deshler Wallace hotel in Columbus hosted a banquet for county entrants in the National Corn Growing contest. Gerald Boutillon of north of Carey placed fourth with 107.78 bushels per acre, while Herman Brodman and Leo Brodman Jr. near Carey finished fifth and sixth with 103.07 and 102.60 bushels per acre respectively.
