Glen Ellison, known as a rugby player in England, is an accomplished athlete and singer. He is an excellent swimmer, huntsman, and enthusiastic horseman whose energetic lifestyle fuels his joyful singing and broad popularity.
Elder S. B. Snyder and BH. Eshelman of the mission board at Bellé fontaine along with Rev. L. H. Dickey of Fostoria visited last Thursday to reopen the Church of the Brethren northwest of town. Services resume with Rev. Dickey preaching every other Sunday starting this past Sunday.
All Maccabee Ladies are asked to attend Friday night’s meeting for an initiation and social hour. A new membership contest is announced, inviting members to observe the Bees swarm.
A News-Bee report details Rev J C Rinehart’s ministry spanning over twenty years. He participated in 1,718 services and led 224 evangelistic campaigns, with more than 12,000 conversions and over 14,000 church members added. He baptized 2,413 by immersion, organized five churches, built three, and worked across 21 states.
At Monday's council meeting two salary ordinances were approved and will appear on another page. An ordinance to close card games at 10 30 was passed but held for amendments. Rev Aloys M Fish presented petitions for paving Clay and West streets. Will Carr presented a petition to pave Down Street. A Friday session will confer with a Toledo paving consultant.
Mrs Phoebe Dipert widow of John Dipert died February 3 1921 after months of illness at 6 30 am at her daughter Mrs Lucinda Boyce home. Funeral held at United Evangelical church with Rev I H Amore officiating. Burial at Spring Grove cemetery. Survived by three children six grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
The family expresses sincere gratitude to friends for thoughts during the long illness and loss of their mother. They thank the minister for consoling words and the singers for services, noting appreciation from Mrs. Lucinda Boyce and Mrs. Chas. C. Carr.
George Weininger’s challenge to D. D. Young and Adam Frederick over election results ends with recount in Sycamore precinct. Court finds minor counting errors, not enough to alter outcome. contest dismissed, costs shared. No further record.
Scott Long, a local boiler maker, retubed and patched a boiler at the water works plant. The boiler, installed about 25 years ago and built in Upner Sandusky, has seen repair work over the years. Superintendent M C Reynolds says no Ohio boiler compares in reliability, noting Garey people have much to learn about boiler expense.
Local news item notes Upper Sandusky will receive a new firefighting apparatus within the month. M. M. Hollinshead, formerly of the county, died in St. Petersburg Florida. The county sees various legal notices, marriages, and deaths, with Chautauqua plans and other community updates included.
The Carey Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting with C. M. Beitler as president and A. D. Stevenson as secretary. Officers and nine department heads were elected, and plans were discussed for a monthly supper, a potential winter fair to fund restroom furnishings, and hopes for industrial growth including a machine shop and a new passenger freight station.
Indications point to Cary becoming a freight terminal for the Hocking Valley. Blueprints show five new switches for Carey yards. The eight hour schedule allows freights to reach Carey without overtime.
Last Friday afternoon a well attended stockholders meeting reported $3 000 worth of stock sold from the original $60 000 incorporation. Directors voted to raise capital stock to $60 000 and two new machines ordered for the plant are expected to arrive this week enabling soon operation.
The United Evangelistic Campaign continues its second week with full houses and growing interest. Evangelists report strong nightly attendances at the Evangelical church, with some standing room and even some turned away. A traveling observer notes unmatched citywide enthusiasm and predicts a great awakening as conversions occur during prayer and appeals. Meetings run through the week at the Evangelical church, with Sunday night moving to the Methodist church for another week.
A town shut the electric light plant briefly after a high tension wire fell in the southwest. Parents and teachers are urged to warn children against touching downed wires, electric or telephone, to prevent dangerous incidents similar to a past accident observed by the writer.
The linotype machine causes occasional mishaps when slugs shift positions. Last week a misaligned slug in a three line ad for Ideal Hat Shop left a $1.00 offer reading beside other copy. Readers typically notice errors, and such mistakes confirm the paper is being read.
The Wharton Farmers Institute will be held Wednesday and Thursday February 23 and 24 with a corn show featured in connection.
Mrs. Mary Sheets returns to her Columbus Grove home Tuesday after a five week visit with her daughter Mrs. William Augustine.
