Local Boy Plays on Navy Basketball Team
Jack Michaels son of Mr and Mrs Ed Michaels has played on the Swan Island varsity basketball team at the Portland Oregon naval base. He appeared as a forward in wins over the University of Oregon Dental College Multnomah Athletic Club and Oregon City. The Swan Islander notes Michaels and sailor Johnny Flores were transferred to Seattle about January 26. Michaels entered the navy in 1942 and served in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

SGT Loren Helfer Receives Army Discharge
SGT Loren Helfer son of Clem Helfer of Clay Street received an honorable discharge at Indiantown Gap Pennsylvania December 28 1945 and arrived home the 29th. He served 2% years including overseas two years with the infantry of the 3rd army in the European theater and took part in the Normandy Campaign Northern France the Rhineland and Central Europe. He is entitled to wear the combat infantry badge the ETO ribbon the Victory and good conduct medals with four battle stars.

Carey High prep sports notes show the Blue Devils hosting Wharton Friday and Kenton Tuesday. Earlier, the March of Dimes Benefit at Carey High gym drew a good crowd and nearly $100 in proceeds. Lundy and Hushour led Sycamore Merchants to a 39 19 win over Carey’s Dyna Fuel. Logsdon top scored 14 for Carey CYO in a 39 29 win over Upper Sandusky. Carey’s boys beat Scotch 50 20 then trounced McCutchenville 50 29 to snap a 3 game skid with Wolfe directing in Reister’s absence. Newell led all scorers with 14 in that McCutchenville win.

Served in Both Wars Local Veteran Seeks Dual Service records
Harry Underwood, a night fireman from a stone quarry, is named as the sole local man with service in both World Wars. Enlisting at 15 before WWI with an official age of 19, he later joined the army in 1941 despite turning 45 that year. He served 3rd Army HQ detachment and troop transport, visiting Italy, Alaska, France and Germany before discharge in 1944. The Carey Times invites other local veterans of both wars to come forward.

Whitford C. Shuman was discharged from the Army January 30 at Camp Atterbury Indiana after 42 months of service. He served in the 3122nd Ordnance Floating Maintenance Barge unit and taught at Aberdeen Proving Grounds for 18 months. He spent a year in the Hawaiian Islands on a maintenance crew, earning the American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons along with good conduct and Victory medals. He and his brother Glenn Shuman, a fellow veteran, plan to open an automotive maintenance repair shop.
