Garey Community Chest Donates to March of Dimes

The Garey Community Chest executive board reports a 200 donation to the infantile paralysis fund. All beneficiaries have been paid except Carey Welfare Board and Teen-age Canteen, which returned surplus funds. The board may add the infantile paralysis foundation to next year’s plan.

Local Boy Plays on Navy Basketball Team

Jack Michaels son of Mr and Mrs Ed Michaels has played on the Swan Island varsity basketball team at the Portland Oregon naval base. He appeared as a forward in wins over the University of Oregon Dental College Multnomah Athletic Club and Oregon City. The Swan Islander notes Michaels and sailor Johnny Flores were transferred to Seattle about January 26. Michaels entered the navy in 1942 and served in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Two men enlist in regular army from Findlay area

Vernon B. Wentz of Carey route 2 and Irvin G. Yeater of Carey 139 Newhard street enlisted at Findlay 107 W Crawford street. After induction at Fort Hayes Columbus they went to Camp Atterbury Indiana for processing. Yeater, son of Ruth E Yeater, is honorably discharged from the U S Army November 17 1945 after three years in the 235th AAF base unit.

Mr and Mrs D E Deidrick and children Phyllis and Gene of Findlay left for Poole s Camp New Smyrna Beach Fla Saturday January 26 and will be away six weeks. They visited Cincinnati with Mrs Baker and daughter Martha who returned home Sunday evening. Mrs Baker arrived home Wednesday. SGT Loren Helfer Receives Army Discharge

SGT Loren Helfer son of Clem Helfer of Clay Street received an honorable discharge at Indiantown Gap Pennsylvania December 28 1945 and arrived home the 29th. He served 2% years including overseas two years with the infantry of the 3rd army in the European theater and took part in the Normandy Campaign Northern France the Rhineland and Central Europe. He is entitled to wear the combat infantry badge the ETO ribbon the Victory and good conduct medals with four battle stars.

Bruce Luzader Receives Honorary Army Discharge

New Hours and Pay Reforms Adopted by Village Council

Village council approves 8 am to 5 pm office hours with Saturday close by noon and extends water and utility payment discounts if due Saturday. Salaried staff gain one paid vacation day per month up to 12 per year plus monthly sick leave. Extra policeman becomes full time. SGT Roscoe W Sharp of Alvada Ohio has been named section chief in the Field Artillery Motor Pool Detachment at Fort Sill Oklahoma. Carey High Blue Devils Face Wharton and Kenton Next Week

Carey High prep sports notes show the Blue Devils hosting Wharton Friday and Kenton Tuesday. Earlier, the March of Dimes Benefit at Carey High gym drew a good crowd and nearly $100 in proceeds. Lundy and Hushour led Sycamore Merchants to a 39 19 win over Carey’s Dyna Fuel. Logsdon top scored 14 for Carey CYO in a 39 29 win over Upper Sandusky. Carey’s boys beat Scotch 50 20 then trounced McCutchenville 50 29 to snap a 3 game skid with Wolfe directing in Reister’s absence. Newell led all scorers with 14 in that McCutchenville win.

Served in Both Wars Local Veteran Seeks Dual Service records

Harry Underwood, a night fireman from a stone quarry, is named as the sole local man with service in both World Wars. Enlisting at 15 before WWI with an official age of 19, he later joined the army in 1941 despite turning 45 that year. He served 3rd Army HQ detachment and troop transport, visiting Italy, Alaska, France and Germany before discharge in 1944. The Carey Times invites other local veterans of both wars to come forward.

Carey Kiwanis Club Meeting Highlights

The Carey Kiwanis club met at Trubey's restaurant on Monday evening with Lieutenant Governor F A Stengel from Marion as guest. Dr Stengel spoke on Kiwanis alms and accomplishments before E N Hale of Marion presented an address on Hobbies and Past Presidents. Eleven guests attended including Chief Petty Officer H K Evans on leave from the USS Sevier. the program was organized by the house and reception committee led by T E Dromgod and flowers were provided by the Carey Greenhouses.

Gerald Traxler of Carey Implement Store buys the two story brick house on S Patterson Street once occupied by Mr and Mrs A E Coppler. John Risner arranged the deal. The Traxler family includes Donald 13 Jimmie 11 Monte 8 and Michael 14. They plan to move from Wharton to Carey soon.

Carey Community Institute to feature Rev Russell Hoy and Mrs D B Phillips

The Carey Community Institute will be held Wednesday and Thursday February 27 and 28 in the high school auditorium. Speakers include Rev Russell H Hoy of Coshocton county and Mrs D B Phillips of Mt Washington. Hoy, called the Parson, is pastor at Canal Lewisville Church and writes The Courary Parson Ponders in the Ohio Farmer Magazine. He is a native Ohioan with deep local ties and a background in farming and ministry.

Wilford C. Shuman Honorably Discharged

Whitford C. Shuman was discharged from the Army January 30 at Camp Atterbury Indiana after 42 months of service. He served in the 3122nd Ordnance Floating Maintenance Barge unit and taught at Aberdeen Proving Grounds for 18 months. He spent a year in the Hawaiian Islands on a maintenance crew, earning the American Theater and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons along with good conduct and Victory medals. He and his brother Glenn Shuman, a fellow veteran, plan to open an automotive maintenance repair shop.

Cpl Carl Stansbery Reenlists for One Year

Cpl Carl Stansbery, just back from Hawaii where he served a year with an anti aircraft battalion, reenlists for one year and will report April 7 to Camp Atterbury Indiana for assignment. He is on a 90 day furlough at the home of his brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs Paul Stansbery of West Street. He has served 32 months in the Army.
