Chapel Program Highlights Loyalty Talk At School

Monday morning chapel was conducted by the student council with Invocation by Helen Gottfried. Lutheran pastor Rev. Paul R. Clouser gave a short talk stressing loyalty to self, friends, work, higher life ideals and God. Mr. Huffman made announcements.

The final lyceum number of the year will be shown next Thursday evening February 14. The program features the well known Broadway hit The Detour, presented as the closing event of the course.

Cecil Hood of Carey Ohio was held at the county jail Saturday pending arraignment before a United States commissioner on charges of sending improper letters through the mail. Hood, secretly indicted by the grand jury a week earlier, was arrested in Carey late Sunday. News reports say Wood has been released on a $1,000 bond.

Auto Runs Amuck Destroys Storefront Glass

A Chevrolet sedan driven by Ollie Marshall ran wild outside Carey Furniture Co damaging a plate glass window and furniture. Mrs Marshall and two children were inside the car. Pauline, two, pulled the shift lever triggering the crash as Mr Marshall returned to move the vehicle home.

Car crashes into store destroys furniture in Coxwell display

Mrs Marshall, unable to brake in time, drove a car into a Coxwell store causing severe damage to a gate leg table and a chair set in a bedroom display. Estimated losses reach about $200 for the furniture and window replacement. No injuries reported to bystanders. Marshall narrowly avoided harm while occupants were nearby. The family resides five miles northwest of town on H G Chambers farm.

Plans for the J. A. Newcomer ditch improvement in Biglick township have been filed with County Auditor G. Ray Morehart by County Surveyor A. P. MacGregor. A final hearing is set for February 21. Project costs are estimated at 18 364 03 and call for large tile sections including 18, 24, 27 and 30 inch vitrified tile.

Saturday night about 10:00 Mrs Flossa Washburn was taken to Huron Road Hospital Cleveland. The Goff ambulance carried Mrs Washburn and Miss Margie Sutphen to Marion where they connected with a Cleveland train. Dr Freida Weiss joined in Cleveland. Perry McDaniel had met her in Fostoria and brought her to Marion. Initial diagnosis suggested appendicitis but later intestinal flu was suspected. Mrs Washburn plans to return to Carey before any operation.

Aged Father Ferdinand Braun Dies After Illness

Ferdinand Braun died at his home on Clay Street from flu complications after a long illness. He was born April 4 1838 in Shelby Ohio and would have been 91. The Carey farmers cooperative held its annual stockholders meeting at Gottfried hall on S Vance with 159 members, the largest turnout. A 5 percent dividend was paid and officers reelected. new directors filled a vacancy. Twin babies buried in single white satin casket

Twin sons of Mr and Mrs George Webber Daugherty born at the county hospital last night weighed two and a half and two and a quarter pounds. They died at midnight and were placed in one white satin casket for burial at Garland Brooks cemetery. Mrs Daugherty is Blanche Pittman formerly of this city.

Fire destroys Cruikshank chemical plant near town

Dangerous activity endangers three boys near Strand theatre

Saturday afternoon an automobile backed from a curb in front of the Strand theatre. Three young children, ready to fasten their sleds to another car, narrowly escaped disaster. The near miss prompted questions about parental and town safety measures to curb this risky conduct.

Purchased porcelain plant owner buys Carey Ohio facility

Joe Silverstein bought the Carey Porcelain Co building and land on Brown Ave for 900 dollars and paid 150 dollars for the engine and boiler. He plans to move his junk business from W South Street to the new site and has not decided on the exact future use.

Gibson Letter on Local Option Describes Meeting at Sycamore Mill

In 1883 a public meeting for local option was held at the unfinished Taylor mill in Sycamore. Gen W H Gibson of Tiffin spoke, the congregation sang Hold the Fort, and he gave a uniquely styled description of the scene. A young teacher inquired for his words and he sent a reply dated April 12 1884 from Tiffin Ohio.

Oscar Wentling Returns From Florida Auto Tour

Nome Florida and companions completed a two months motor tour. After a death in the group Mrs. Leo Wood Harpster the party split. Wentling rode a bus from Tampa to Findlay arriving Friday morning. He traced a route from Atlanta to Newport 700 miles with tourist camps, fishing and self supplied fruit and coconuts amid storm area damage signs.

A 9 pound son arrived for Mr and Mrs J A Newcomer of Vanlue on Sunday morning. Mrs Newcomer was formerly Miss Margaret Crawford of Vanlue.
