The Carey Schools band directed by Leonard Klein performs an open air concert on September 1 featuring Queen City March, The Elves Overture, Little Giant March, Skater's Waltzes, Billboard March, Vallé Bleue, Our Director March, Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, and Under the Double Eagle.

Girls 4-H Picnic Showcases Demos and Health Contest

One hundred sixty five girls attended the 4-H picnic at the fair grounds on Friday August 20. Miss Vera Taylor won first place in complete costume and Margaret Secrist took second in dress revues. Demonstrations featured winning teams from Ever Ready club and Carey club with topics on packing a suitcase and 24 hours in cotton. Salem won a ball game to conclude events.

Trip to Canada by local residents and visitors

Miss Eloise Stutzman Rex Donelson and Art Heeman returned from a Canada vacation. Mrs Edna Anderson and Jackie Anderson joined, with Stutzman visiting Toledo friends Dr Edward Amberd. The Sault Ste Marie Times quotes the party enjoying Goulais River camping and plans to return next year.

New Bakery to Open on S Vance Street

Harold Stumpp of Sycamore plans a new bakery on S Vance Street in the former Red Star shoe shop room. It opens to the public Saturday September 4. Ed Ernest moves his shoe business one door north to share space with Krupp harness shop. Stumpp brings in equipment formerly used by the Rudder bakery in Fostoria.

Flood Control Plans Studied in Carey

At a special village council meeting on Thursday officials studied flood control options for Carey. Champe Fink sbeiner & Associates of Toledo were hired to survey the local situation and two plans were discussed. One enlarges the tunnel under the Big Four railroad to increase water flow through Spring Run, the other considers a natural reservoir in the west end with a dam and gates to slow flow. A 20 acre plot owned by Lee Ogg is being surveyed to locate the proposed reservoir and compare merits of both options. The June flood emphasized the need to prevent a recurrence.

Burial for Unidentified Man Found by Railroad Tracks

Short funeral services were held for an unidentified man found dead along the A C and Y railroad tracks. Burial followed in Ritchie cemetery at Crawford. Officials pursue an investigation into the death, with locals recalling an explosion near the scene and no gunshot wounds. The body showed severe head injuries and fractures consistent with a fall or being struck by a train.

Darby Girls 4-H Club Judging and State Fair Honors

The August 18 meeting judged projects with Mildred Kummerer's items named best and sent to the state fair in Columbus. Janice Corron's dress and Caroline Kummerer's demonstrations earned top placements and will represent the county at the state fair. The group visited Upper Sandusky August 20 for a style revue and a team demonstration placed second. A picnic lunch followed and the club plans to attend the state fair next week.

Mary-Martha class of Christ Lutheran Sunday school hosts a social this Thursday evening at Miss Louise Romig's west of town. Miss Dorcas Brown and Mrs Ruby Criger assist. Members meet at 7:45 at the church to share auto transport to the event.

Nation's Fair Their Objective

Mrs. Vincent Astor is named chairman of the National Women's Advisory Committee for the 1939 New York World's Fair. Winthrop W. Aldrich of Chase National Bank leads the national men's committee. Grover Whalep says state chairmen will be named and every state will participate to make the fair nationwide.

Women of the Moose Rally Draws Large Attendance

The Women of the Moose held a well attended meeting Tuesday with visitors from Galion and Bucyrus. Mr. Williams of the Galion lodge spoke on Moose activities worldwide while Carey lodge men reported surpassing their new member quota. The group welcomed new women members, planned initiations, and shared a potluck supper. Williams requested a future visit.

Grover Traxler Named Secretary in State Education Department

Columbus. State Education Director KE N Dietrich announces Grover Traxler of Wharton Wyandot county as secretary replacing Phil Carter who moves to Toledo. Traxler will keep his current duties and salary of 3000 dollars while filling the new role effective September 1. Ashland names a new superintendent of schools.

Industrial claim hearings speeded by new statute

A new law and 15 related acts take effect to speed up industrial compensation claims. Four regional boards will hear cases with a central board in Columbus, expanding capacity fivefold. Regional boards may be in Cleveland Toledo Cincinnati and Steubenville. A separate act doubles wine permits in larger counties and sets a 50 000 to 25 000 population basis while limiting permits per person or corporation. Other measures relieve police from personal liability while on duty establish dealer licensing and cap weekly work hours for women and minors. Clinics for incipient insanity patients are created at state institutions with funding requested but not yet appropriated. A two year statute of limitations applies to certain deficiency judgments on residences and farm homes.

The Wyandot County Auto Club held its annual outdoor picnic and summer meeting Friday at Harrison Smith park in Upper Sandusky with about 200 attendees. Gland Dorf Defeats Carey Five To Three In Tough Game

Glandorf defeated Carey five to three on a hard fought Sunday contest. Pierce pitched for Glandorf limiting Carey to eight hits while Glandorf totaled eleven off Del Parsell. Rex Donelson and Fouts were out for Carey, hurting defense and offense, and Carey plans another game with Glandorf on September 6 with a full lineup to even the series.
