Carey Area Young Women Receive Franciscan Habit

Two local women joined nine others in taking Franciscan habit at St. Francis Convent Tiffin on August 12. Jane Lamberjack became Sister Mary Ellen and Marilyn Miller became Mary Patricia. Bishop Behring led Mass with sermon by Fr. Vincent Ford er. A reception followed with relatives and friends in attendance.

Thousands Worship At Catholic Shrine In Carey

Thousands of Catholics from many states visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey for the Assumption observance. Bishop George Behring presided at a candlelight procession and Pontifical Mass as confessions were heard in at least 13 languages. Rev. Justin Phelps became pastor, succeeding Rev. Theodore Eickholtz, who moves to Clarksville Indiana. Sunday pilgrimages continued all summer, and Norbert Ahner noted increased traffic on the Fremont Port Clinton Ohio Turnpike aiding local business.

Carey High opens football practice with 50 players

Carey High School began football practice Tuesday with 50 players under Head Coach Carl E. Cupp and assistants William Heath John Drobnick Don Fin ley and Vernon Hull. Fourteen lettermen return led by Wendell Wenner Charles Platt Larry Cole Eddie Hotelling Dennie Long Dick Hucke Terry Jesko Charles Dasher Marion Weaver Herman Seifert Tom Greer Don Stock Rex Orians and John McDaniel. The twice daily sessions continue two weeks with a scrimmage against Columbus Grove next Tuesday at 9 30. Carey plans to open the season versus Upper Sandusky then Oak Harbor on September 13 at Oak Harbor.

Welsh Scores Ace on Fairview Course

John Welsh sank a 161 yard hole in one on No 3 at Fairview Golf Club as part of practice for a Labor Day national hole-in-one contest. His witnesses were Bob Donelson Willard Rettig and Frank Rousey. Donelson won a Fairview match play final 2 and 1 and received the Sanitary Cleaning Works trophy.

Death Claims Willis H. Houk 86 Carey Hardware Pioneer

Willis H. Houk 86 longtime Carey hardware owner died at 5 15 p m Tuesday Aug 20 1957 at the home of his son Harold G Hoduk 740 W Findlay St after two years of declining health and three months of serious illness. He founded W H Houk & Son Hardware in 1894 and was active in the Ohio Hardware Association and the Fifty Year Hardware Club receiving a gold hammer for 62 years in the trade. Funeral 2 30 p m Friday at First Methodist Church with burial in Spring Grove cemetery. Funeral home to church from 1 30 p m Friday. Carey stores to close for services. Contributions urged to Dorcas Carey Public Library in his memory.

Reverend Marks Returns to Carey as MAP Funding Debuts

The Rev. Walter Marks begins his third year at Memorial EUB Church in Carey after reassignment by the Ohio Sandusky Conference stationing committee as the 125th session closed August 10 at St Marys. A highlight was the $90,000 Mission Advance Program to fund new churches and expand existing ones. The conference approved buying the Chance Foundation building at 422 West Sandusky Street Findlay for $30,000 and renting extra space to local businesses. The current occupants Porcelain Products Inc and the conference will vacate or move.

The Carey village council meeting Monday night was postponed due to insufficient members present. Clyde Jenkins and Wayne R. Terry were the only attendees, while Robert Creeger and Robert Heck were excused by Chairman Jenkins.

Swimming in Rhythm Water Show at Memorial Park

The swimming in Rhythm water show at Memorial Park is set for Friday August 30 at 8 pm with rain date August 31. Dress rehearsals occur August 27 and 29 at 8 30 pm and a practice for all groups August 28. Local talent will perform diving calypso water ballet and a life saving exhibition narrated by Jeff Hilty.

Miss Shirley Ann Wisner daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Wisner of Carey Ohio was graduated from Carnegie Institute Cleveland as a registered medical laboratory technician. Commencement was held at Trinity Cathedral with Rev Richard C Swagger as speaker and Dr Edward A Kraft playing the organ. Wisner earned certification from the American Medical Technologists and is employed with Dr T R Shoupe of Findlay since June.

Carey Kiwanis Club to Host Sun Themed Talk

Paul H Kaufman director of public information for Northern Ohio Telephone Company will speak at the Carey Kiwanis Club meeting on August 26. He will discuss Our Friend the Sun and demonstrate a solar battery underscoring sun powered electricity.
