Marbella Golf and Country Club is cited for violating city noise standards after an $880 study. The city asked the club to file an action plan by Sept 15 detailing how it will meet ordinances following a resident's complaint about loud mowers and blowers before 7 a.m.
The city will repave the lot between Mission Promenade and Swallows Inn and install new lighting to prepare for Chico's to open in the Promenade. City Council approved the $18 000 improvements by 4 to 1 with Councilman David Swerdlin dissenting.
The St Margaret's Episcopal School plans a 55100 structure including a 38600 square foot gymnasium on its 16.85 acre site. City Council approved the plan unanimously, adding a zoning change to grant the city greater ability to limit the school’s maximum enrollment.
City Council approves the long delayed 416 home development on 256 acres off Valle Road and Camino Las Ramblas after hours of discussion. The 4-0 vote accepts environmental studies and sets affordable housing rules with final details due September 16. Councilwoman Bathgate abstained.
Marge Madigan, 87, and Matthew Knoth, 15, load a cart with thermal bags to keep meals hot for the Meals on Wheels program run by South County Senior Services at the San Juan Senior Center. The $10,000 Community Grant funds the 2003-04 program year.
San Juan Capistrano residents face a 5 percent water rate increase approved by the City Council to address a multi year drought and lower well production. Average monthly bills rise from 37.93 to 39.77 for 20 units, with annual re evaluation planned. Councilman David Swerdlin dissented.
On Tuesday and Wednesday the private Catholic school welcomed 110 ninth graders and 50 tenth graders to three buildings on Junipero Serra Road. Dozens of folding chairs faced a stage as 160 IBM laptops were prepared for distribution and 275 people toured the new student union. Ninth grader Sarah Schanz, 13, sang A Leap of Faith in honor of the moment, noting it felt miraculous and a leap of faith to start the school after a year of controversy between environmentalists and others seeking action.
