Memorial Day Poppy Sale To Benefit Veterans Groups

Les Blair commander of VFW Serra Post 3801 and veterans will sell buddy poppies outside local stores through Memorial Day. Proceeds aid Veterans Hospitals widows and orphans. A ceremony honoring the fallen starts at 9 a.m. Monday at the old cemetery off Ortega Highway, public is invited.

SunCal plan for 416 homes reviewed for 60 days in Pacifica

Anaheim based SunCal proposes a 256 acre development off Valle Road and Camino las Ramblas in Pacifica featuring six neighborhoods with 416 homes plus parks open space and RV storage. An 8 acre site is set aside for a proposed elementary school pending environmental review and public input during the 60 day City Hall comment period.

Council clears Honeyman Ranch development plan

The City Council approved the Honeyman Ranch project by a 3-2 vote, authorizing a 124 home, 78 acre upscale development east of Rancho Viejo Road and north of Ortega Highway. Mayor Gelff and Councilwoman Bathgate dissented. The historic Arley Leck bungalow may move off-site, a 4-1 vote with Bathgate in dissent.

JSerra site lease disputed by Buchheim family member

A Buchheim family member told Capistrano Valley City Council that JSerra High School backers should not get the lease to land at Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road and that the project should not be approved. The council voted 4-1 to approve the rezoning for school use of 29 acres despite a pending March 10 lawsuit by landowners challenging lease legality and the Putuidem village site.

City council fees for non profits face potential cuts

City policy has waived facility and park fees for non profits using city spaces for classes plays and shoe giveaways. Fees range from 20 to 110 per hour with most groups receiving full waivers. A 2002 2003 minutes review shows waivers totaling up to 9 000. Mayo Pro Tem Joe Soto praised nonprofits while warning reductions may end and suggesting corporate sponsorships to underwrite the costs. The council voted 5 0 afterward.
