MASSILLON Sept 23 Striking shop and car department employees of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railroad and others laid off by the company held a meeting in the city hall auditorium. Reports from a Cleveland conference between a shopmen committee and railroad officials were presented but no agreement on Brewster shop working conditions. Grand Lodge Representative S Newman and George Bowen spoke on national railroad labor conditions and recent agreements. The strikers voted to remain united until a satisfactory agreement is reached with company officials at Brewster.
Washington reports Miss Lucille Atcherson of Columbus Ohio the only woman named to a diplomatic post by the president failed to win senate confirmation in the closing minutes of congress.

Vasil St Arndoff, recently freed from Stark county workhouse on a $500 prohibition fine, was arrested in Indianapolis at Police Chief Lengel’s request. A warrant accuses him of false pretense for borrowing $620 to pay the fine while claiming encumbrance free real estate. authorities allege a $1,000 debt encumbers the property.

Paris reports the cabinet approved a Turkish note drafted by England France Italy and Jugoslavia inviting Turkey to a peace conference. It guarantees Turkish sovereignty over Constantinople and eastern Thrace but calls for internationalization of the Straits, allowing a foothold in Europe without fortification of the Dardanelles.
Dr Nicholas Lupu former Romanian interior minister and anti royalist leader spoke in Canton saying the United States can prevent large wars by withholding loans. He noted Romanians endured heavy losses in the last war and described economic strain across Europe from currency depreciation. He cited Romania’s demographics and slow reconstruction, and warned about high European unemployment tied to exchange rates. He mentioned paying 35 000 kronen for lunch.
J H Eggelston proprietor of a restaurant at 4000 Mahoning rd NE was burned about the hands in a fire and explosion that damaged the kitchen at 8 53 Saturday morning. He was preparing to fill with gasoline a torch under a coffee urn when a five gallon can of gasoline ignited and exploded. Eggelston was hurled down a flight of steps to the cellar and the can blew into the yard. Fire caused by the blast damaged the kitchen interior to the extent of several hundred dollars.
Ohio State Director of Education Riegel issues an order requiring future teaching certificate seekers to pass a spring examination before graduation. The move targets about 1,600 students in 54 county normal schools and ends the previous practice of awarding diplomas without testing subject knowledge.

John Parakas sues for divorce from Ciselia Parakas alleging a yearlong trans Atlantic courtship by mail and marriage on August 20. He says she fled after three weeks, refusing to return, after he sent money to help her come to Albuquerque. Attorney J A Burris represents him.
In South Bend Indiana on September 24 Harry Poulin faced cross examination as he denies claims of a clandestine romance with Mrs. Mere Anusta Tiernan wife of Notre Dame professor John P Tiernan. He asserts alibi and fidelity including attendance at Lenten services and care of his children. The defense aimed to show he was never alone with Tiernan between February 28 and March 28 of last year.
Dr. Albert Abrams, whose blood tests assess paternity in San Francisco, has been officially recognized by Superior Judge Thomas F. Graham. He will travel to Chicago to meet with Professor John P. Tiernan of Notre Dame about testing the fatherhood of a child claimed in the Tiernan case.

Patrolman Nick Rosuta narrowly escaped death after being struck by a Maryland Avenue car at the Tuscarawas Street Market Avenue intersection while directing traffic. He suffered a severe head cut, was taken to a physician, then sent home.
A swarm of Italian bees was found in the Bethshan home yard in Harrisburg, captured by a neighbor and moved to a hive. Rev. L M McLeister says the swarm brings good luck and may yield honey for the Pethshan Tome for Girls residents.
Columbus dispatch reports William H. Miller republican state chairman urged at the state executive committee meeting that more volunteer work be organized in precincts and townships. He called for more business in politics and less reliance on state management to boost party activity.

Pittsburgh report cites faulty construction after the Strand theater lobby collapse that killed one child and injured over 60, with Sol Selznick among the hurt. Investigators found rotten wood props and a cement block 15 by 12 by six inches backing the collapse. The owner was in the lobby distributing tickets when the disaster occurred during a free performance.
Nearly all crew aboard the Aalansbef lightship were killed when the vessel was blown up by a floating mine near Copenhagen. The report notes the disaster occurred on September 23 and that a heavy loss of life followed.
