Gov James Ferguson was removed from office by the Texas Senate on September 22 in a 27 to 4 vote after 21 impeachment articles were brought by the House. The charges included profiteering from deposits for Canyon City Normal funds and misuse of funds from West Texas Normal school. Ferguson, denying guilt, declared he would not resign and lamented political clashes between democracy and autocracy. He had been elected in 1914 and reelected in 1916.
Washington reports Maj. Gen. Hugh L. Scott retires as chief of staff and Maj. Gen. Tasker H. Bliss succeeds him. Both will be sent to France on active duty to serve under Maj. Gen. Pershing, despite nearing retirement ages. They express eagerness to go to the firing line.

King was arrested in Concord North Carolina on a homicide charge in the death of Mrs. King who was shot Aug 29 A coroner's inquest and preliminary hearing are expected soon as Means is kept under sheriff guard and transported with legal aides to face a magistrate.

British air planes acting as eyes for a mosquito flotilla attacked Ostend naval works and downed three German seaplanes. Bombardment of coast works reported successful. In Flanders the British repelled mass German counter thrusts as dusk fell with heavy losses on both sides. Aircraft saw action as British flyers attacked infantry and bombed behind lines. ten German planes were shot down, six driven out of control, while British losses reached nineteen machines.
Rome September 22 Corporal Raimundo Scintu of the Lazzari Brigade recommended for a decoration for capturing seven Austro Hungarians single handed. He then led seven followers who captured more than 100 Austro Hungarians.
Dr Henry Van Dyke former minister to the Netherlands declares there can be no peace while the Potsdam gang remains active. He warns that peace now would be only a truce and urges the U S to crush Germany in response to the pope peace note.
