Henry Hood 62 Massillon was shot to death at his home on Lincoln Avenue as William Rhinehart, his son in law, alleged murderer, fled. Police secured clues to Rhinehart’s whereabouts and expect arrest soon after a scuffle with Ernest Russell left Russell injured. A post mortem found Hood died by first degree murder.
The first foreign peace time army parade through Paris featured American marchers from across the United States. The American Legion led a 1:59 PM march from Place Trena with French forces, passing the Alan Seeger monument amid ceremonies honoring Americans in French service. Lorenge D. Brown of B F Goodrich died suddenly in New York en route.
A four week old baby girl claimed by no one is under habeas corpus proceedings in Cleveland. A conference today involves four blood specialists two attorneys and a common pleas judge to determine the child parentage as the mother denies maternity. Mrs Smith nurses the child alone in the hospital while the case proceeds before Judge Carty Werygandt.
Roosevelt Field launches the Spokane air derby class B race with 25 starters. Waco 10 pilot W. Meyers Detroit leads after 1 p m while A M Banks Pitcairn Fleetwing suffers engine trouble. Cantwell from Oklahoma City returns citing fog blocking mountains. Race tracks through Hellefonte and Bellefonte with stops at Chicago Glendive and Missoula toward Spokane. Five prize pool totals 9700 dollars with top awards 6000 3000 and 1000.
Dayton authorities set to arraign Roy Freeman on a murder charge for the shooting death of motorcycle officer William Horn. Freeman confessed to firing when stopped by the officer, fled, hid in a field, and was wounded after refusing to halt during pursuit. The Montgomery county grand jury plans to indict within days.
Federal Prohibition Commissioner Deran announced a quantitative control system for commercial alcohol production to prevent surplus from reaching bootleg channels. Industrial alcohol makers will be advised within weeks on their allowed output for next year.
A Canton conference set for Tuesday at 4 pm between city welfare and Empire Abatement committees to discuss a chamber request for 4600 to fund a smoke inspector and office setup for winter. McAdoo had withdrawn from the nomination race and both men claimed they did not know the other was in New York, denying any planned alliance or contact. In Ohio, a separate report notes a Sep 19 fire destroyed the Farmers Elevator at Wharton, endangering nearby structures and burning 3000 bushels of wheat and 269 tons of coal, with damage expected to reach $16,000.
The Anti-Saloon League’s acting counsel Francis Scott McBride issued a militant program urging that any presidential candidate be able to uphold the oath to uphold the constitution and support prohibition. He called for cooperation with lawyers and officials to enforce prohibition and protect its interests in Congress.
About hundred veterans of the Spanish American War attended a one day gathering of the United Spanish War Veterans in Ashland yesterday. Judge Edward Matthias of the Ohio Supreme Court, commander of the organization, opened with an address emphasizing recognition for all soldiers by the government. Mayor B F Zercher welcomed attendees. Speakers included Mrs. Wilhelmina Vaughn of Cleveland head of the women’s auxiliary and U S Representative John McSweeney of Wooster.
The body of Lieut William A Sheehan former attorney general office attache at Columbus was brought to Washington from the Argonne where he lay in a shell hole for nearly nine years. Burial is set for Arlington Cemetery. He was a Covington native who later lived in Columbus. Pallbearers include Wade HM Eliza former Ohio attorney general and Sheehan's law partner before he enlisted in 1917.
Deputies raid Thompson home north of Greentown during a corn roast arresting Mack Thompson and seizing home brew and supplies. Sheriff Ed Gibson says a party of about 40 relatives gathered as the raid found quantities of illicit liquor and reported ongoing sales by Mack Thompson.
Toledo resumes classes after a two week delay caused by an infantile paralysis epidemic. About 57,000 students are expected to enroll in the city schools with roughly 43,904 entering public wheels and 11,900 enrolled for work in parish schools.
