Reports from Sept. 19 describe American air and artillery strikes battering a major Metz factory and fortifications as the drive advances fifteen miles into previously held German lines. Refugees return to villages along the Meuse and Moselle while patrols reconnoiter the Hindenburg line section.
Haig's forces break enemy efforts along the Hindenburg Line mention eleven miles of outposts captured and a push toward Lens to Havrincourt. Allies hold the line from Lens to Havrincourt and take many prisoners amid heavy enemy counterattacks. In Macedonia Allied forces drive Bulgars back and capture about 4,000, with operations within two miles of St Quentin.
Captain R W Schroeder of Wilbur Wright Aviation field soared to over 28 000 feet near Canton to surpass his previous 27 200 foot record by 800 feet. He landed at the Canton field after descending in cloud and snow with 32 below zero temperatures reported. Schroeder, a Chicago man, held the world record for altitude and eclipsed the French record of 26 000 feet by about 200 feet. He was hosted by locals and planned to spend the night in Canton before continuing his journey.
