Reports say German positions were flanked and many soldiers perished while British forces reinforced with fresh troops, accelerating the push on the front. Casualty figures are unconfirmed but dispatches describe heavy losses on both sides.
Antwerp reports the defense of Termonde where German forces occupied the city but retreated amid heavy Belgian and British help. Belgians flooded dikes to slow the advance, Marines from Royal Navy reserve ships aided lines, and Allied counteroffensive checked the German push toward Ghent and Ostend.
London reports three German army corps were driven back upon Guise by French troops with marked disorder and high ranking officers among the dead. The center of the attacking line appears to have given way though wings hold.
Meager reports from Belgium indicate a new British force has landed and moved against German units guarding major cities. Belgian forces reportedly joined soon after arrival, helping to check a German advance on Ghent as German troops withdraw to attack toward Paris.
United Press reports a Red Cross relief ship sails Monday from ash docks carrying at least ten units. Each unit includes a surgeon and six nurses with medicines and bandages. Units head to Havre Rotterdam Antwerp and Antwerp ports for France Russia Germany Austria and Belgium for wounded care.
The Daily News issued at midnight so its workers could join labor groups and other unions in the city for Labor Day festivities and solidarity events.
Sir John French says German losses are three times those of Britain as British forces resist heavy German offensives. He praises English marksmanship and stubborn defense that kept allies mostly on the defensive, forcing German assaults and high casualties.

Japanese aircraft circled over Tsingtau and dropped bombs on the German wireless station causing severe damage. They faced heavy fire but returned to the ship with the fortifications' plans likely secured aiding a Japanese assault. One plane carried 15 bullet holes on return.

Joseph E. Wilson sixty four longtime East Sparta grocer died at his home Sunday after a three week illness from heart trouble. He was single and survived by a half sister Miss Mary Malotte. Funeral at 1:30 pm Monday at the Christian church with burial in East Sparta. Rev T H Orr officiating.
