James V. McCann reports the Woman in White finished a two hour prayer service as hundreds stayed in the darkened municipal auditorium after the altar call kneeling in penitence. Caretakers guided the crowd to the corridors and street as the stage faded.
The newly inaugurated Bishop of Cleveland, Joseph Schrembs, arrives in Canton for three major church ceremonies and a public reception. A large Catholic gathering is planned at the high school auditorium with language of civic welcome from local leaders.
In San Antonio and Chicago reports detail a split in railway unions during the looming October 30 strike. About 690 I and G N trainmen were ordered back after a telegraphic directive. AFL leaders say nearly a million workers won t join the walkout, including shop crafts and maintenance of way unions, while others defer action pending labor board rulings.
London reports official pessimism over renewing the Irish peace talks unless Sinn Fein abandons demands for absolute independence. A British official said a break is possible and the armistice could lapse, with Britain ready to deploy full military strength against Ireland if fighting resumes. Sinn Fein remains defiant with no sign of retreat.

The board of education awarded contracts for equipping McKinley High School machine shops at a special Saturday session. Westinghouse Co received the electrical equipment contract while various firms received machinery work contracts. Machinery will be ordered immediately and shops should be ready within three months.
The Canton Kiwanis club schedules the first community Halloween and Mardi Gras celebration with a street parade and a City Auditorium program on Saturday October 29. The parade starts at 7 pm and follows a large route through downtown Canton ending at the Auditorium where vaudeville acts and chorus performances will be staged.
Floyd E. Waite, Ohio state director of finance, says a survey is under way to shield state buildings from fire losses by potentially carrying state insurance or using commercial companies. Currently only the Columbus office building is insured due to lease terms.

Berlin reports the German cabinet led by Chancellor Wirth has resigned to President Ebert after weeks of tension over Upper Silesia. A new coalition cabinet is being discussed with possible leaders Marx Adenauer or Wirth, though Wirth’s return is unlikely due to party rifts.
Washington October 22 The Senate adopted the compromise agricultural bloc amendment setting fifty percent as the maximum surtax on incomes by a 54 to 13 vote. An effort to substitute 32 percent failed 15 to 52 and a bid to keep 65 percent was defeated 2 to 43. An amendment to lower the rate from four to two percent on incomes under 5000 remained pending at adjournment.

Three people, including two boys, were injured in separate Canton auto accidents Saturday. Fred Kelley five was struck by J. A. Calhoun and treated for a scalp wound. George Ruse twelve was hit by Carl Wise and suffered leg injuries. Frank McMahon, a colored teamster, had teeth knocked out when his wagon was struck by Gust Beneleit. both vehicles and the wagon were damaged.
John Berbes in Wauseon Ohio receives a long awaited foreign postmarked letter reporting family tragedies in Russia. The message states mother and father died within days of each other, an aunt and her son perished next, and famine ravages the area with no rain for six months.
