Stark County reports three deaths from the holiday with additional injuries. Victims include four year old Valavia Russ, 48 year old Anthony Breckenridge, and 45 year old Elmer Bolia. Coroner T C McQuate investigates after a vehicle strike near Northeast Stark City.
United Press reports a sultry Memorial Day as heat and heat related incidents caused most of over 109 deaths nationwide. New York led with 30 deaths including drownings, while Illinois followed with seven drownings and several automobile fatalities.
Chicago on Memorial Day saw two gangsters killed, though neither tied to major factions. Thomas McGilligot, a racketeer, was shot in a cafe basement, four bullets found on the wall as police seek a shooter. Dominick Costa, operator of a bootleg kitchen outfit, was killed and his body burned in a suburb, motive unclear.
Pittsburg May 31 Newspapers avoid blaming police for failing to find criminals Charley and Anne. Editors and newsboys search nationwide, wondering where a nobody could hide. Lindy located at Yaphank after trains and camps. author suggests soldiers trained there could overlook him.
Mayor C. C. Curtis blasted the rail companies for slow repairs to crossings in the city. He warned the state public utilities commission may be asked to inspect and order improvements after more than a year of accidents and delays. Safety Director Harry M. Kimbel cited several conferences with rail reps and promises to hasten work that have so far fallen short.
State Treasurer H Ross Ake of Canton delivered the Memorial Day address at Riverside Cemetery in East Liverpool arguing Americans must accept political responsibility. He urged peace makers lie between militarists and pacifists and dismissed war, noting his three sons of military age and warning against Hohenzollerns. The page also lists local poultry and egg prices at 602 East Tuscara Ave.
The Ohio Supreme Court in Columbus heard arguments on two Canton matters. One questions whether the municipal airport purchase should go to a public vote and the other concerns reinstating Saranus A. Paris newspapers clash after the French cinema control commission backs a four American films to one French film import rule. The cabinet discussed the proposal and Coty, a prominent perfume maker and publisher, published a front page favoring the American side of the dispute.
London May 31 The king is reported to have an abscess on the right side of the chest and is bedridden but able to conduct public business. The bulletin notes the abscess is draining and he had a fairly comfortable night, while the nation watches Windsor anxiously as he nears the end of a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Dorothy Snyder wife of attorney Alonzo Snyder was stabbed to death in her home during a wage dispute with her maid Anna Zeman. Detectives said the maid confessed claiming a quarrel over money due. Snyder has opposed the Van Sweringen brothers.
Edgar Enochs, veteran movie stunt man from Mullica Hills New Jersey, died on Memorial Day near Clark's Summit Pennsylvania when his parachute failed during a planned 2000 foot drop from a plane piloted by Walter Gradeline. The crowd witnessed the fall as his body twisted in the air before impact.
Meadow Brook Butter, cream cheese, provolone lard and pressed chickens appear in a local ad. Peony Garden at 2130 Cleveland Ave NW showcases cut flowers. Various grocery items priced, including jelly rolls and fig bars, with United Poultry Market at 218 6th Parc MD listed for live and dressed chickens and fresh eggs.
Washington May 31 Accumulating evidence of international anger at the Hawley tariff schedules prompts Secretary Stimson to seek congressional action. Foreign critics, via newspaper dispatches and confidential diplomat reports, include Canada and Argentina as major concerns due to their status as top American trading partners. The Vancouver Sun denounces US tariff tactics toward Canada.
A Memorial Day heat wave pushed Canton to 108 degrees in the sun, 85 in shade, with a cooling breeze offering scant relief. Downtown readings reached 85, while the day saw farmers plowing, grain fields reviving in bright sun. In Lima, heat overwhelmed two teachers and 24 students at Lima Central High School exercises, held at College Field, with some fainting noted.
Simple funeral services were held in Wooster for E K Geiselman former mayor who died after a stroke in his city hall office. The rite, led by Rev S F M Neasbitt, paused city business. Pallbearers included Edward Greenwald Louis Greenwald Harry Greenwald Donald Geiselman and nephews Herbert Greenwald and William Geiselman.
Hollywood May 41 Charlie Chaplin renowned film comedian is confined to his home with illness. An attack of lumbago interrupted work on his current picture for a second time in recent weeks. He previously suffered ptomaine poisoning a month earlier delaying production about two weeks. His latest illness began Wednesday.
Detroit May 31 Five thousand five hundred Congregational churches across the United States are represented as the National Council advances incidental resolutions toward final approval N ext Tuesday. The Congregationalists seek union with the General Convention of the Christian Church in what would be the first national denominational merger in U S history and could spur further consolidations.
A Muskogee Oklahoma picnic and dance attended by about 200 people led to food poisoning when box lunches caused ptomaine infection. A dozen people were treated in local hospitals with several reported in critical condition. The event was the annual Muskogee firefighters celebration. Mrs. George Higginbotham, wife of the fire chief, was among the seriously affected.

London May 31 The Conservative party led by Premier Stanley Baldwin was routed by the Socialist Labour party of J Ramsay MacDonald in the general election. As returns neared completion Labour led with 285 seats at 6 pm on 577 districts. Conservatives 239. Liberals 48. Others 5. Labour needed 26 more for a majority and held overwhelming momentum despite late uncertainty. The day saw notable upsets as results poured in across constituencies.
Paul Lamergetis alias Paul Brown, a central figure in liquor law cases, was returned to county jail by his bondsmen. He faced $1200 bond pending appeal for possession of liquor and $2500 for perjury tied to the liquor trial. He had earlier been linked to a Tuscarawas street boayous place with liquor tanks and was involved in raids with Harry Bouklias before charges were dropped. Bondsmen sought relief from responsibility due to repeated arrests.
Memorial Day brought multiple tragedies in Washington area. Merla Mathews, 30, of Harrisonburg Virginia, and William Lavender, 23, of Rock Island Illinois, drowned when their canoe overturned in the Potomac. Both were school teachers. Also, Cora Lee Pope, 44, of Baltimore, collapsed at Clark Griffith Stadium during the Washington New York game due to the heat. James Johnson, 13, drowned in the eastern Potomac while seeking relief from the heat. Police reported one prostration as temperatures hit 92 degrees.
Henry Sherman, 22, triple murderer, faced execution at 6:33 a.m. after pleading for forgiveness from Joseph Dieriex, brother of one victim, Mrs. Roger Ponshon. Dieriex refused as the helmet was strapped and current activated following the May 18, 1928 killings.
Canton observed a day of tribute to war heroes, living and dead, choosing outdoor venues to beat the heat. Thousands swarmed highways, golf links, and baseball diamonds while beaches opened early, and lakeside crowds enjoyed two Lakeside Stadium games as the Terriers beat Fort Wayne 3-0 in the morning and lost 3-1 to the visitors in the afternoon. Airplane fields buzzed with activity as passengers flew overhead, and Meyers Lake Park hosted a fireworks display to close the day’s events.
Capt. Albin Ahrenberg the Swedish aviator will begin a flight to New York via Greenland and Labrador on June 6 after a delayed start due to bad weather. A new German motor arrived and was installed, with Ahrenberg and Lieut. Axel Flodeen along with L Jungland carrying out a successful blind flying test by radio compass in fog and clouds. They expect to be about $1800 short for expenses and have appealed to Swedish businessmen for funds.
Paris May 31 Premier Poincare may ask the finance and foreign affairs commission to ratify by decree the Mellon Berenger debt accord between France and the United States. He may also seek ratification by decree of the Caillaux Churchill accord with Great Britain due to anticipated difficulty in the chamber of deputies.
