The Green Flash and Yellow Bird transatlantic attempts were postponed due to unfavorable conditions. The Yellow Bird briefly took off from the beach with navigator Pan Assolant but returned after a gas leak. the Green Flash sank into sand after 100 yards travel, with a damaged right wheel.
An explosion at a Hackensack river construction site toppled a caisson and buried thirteen sand hogs under mud and sand. Rescue efforts rushed injured workers to Jersey City Hospital, with two possibly fatally harmed. The caisson was part of a diagonal bridge project linking New York City to the Jersey shore for holland tunnel access.
New York May 29 The Lindberghs honeymoon pursuit weakens as rumors prove false and reporters grow weary. Volunteers for stories report confusion from planted tips and a heat wave hampers coverage.
Norbert B. Gill, 23, hanged himself in his room at 193 Waverly Place Greenwich Village New York. A farewell note was found addressed to Mrs. Leo T. Gill of Huntington Park California. Police reported the death by his own action as of today.
Two local youths Frank Mosack and Stanley Balla were recovering from serious burns after handling mine powder found in Oldtown valley. Deputies said an explosion occurred near their home, injuring the 14 and 16 year old boys.
Detroit on May 29 reports J C Field a year old bank clerk was held pending coroner’s inquiry after shooting his father Archie L Field during a family reunion. Field said he fired to protect his mother from a drunken father.
Memorial Day morning the Green Flash take-off from Old Orchard Beach Maine will be shown across the country on NBC. The event is coordinated with station WCSH Portland and features three announcers stationed a mile apart along the flight path to describe the start of the journey by American flyers.
The state supreme court will hear arguments Friday on petitions demanding a special election over purchasing the Harrisburg road site for a municipal airport. City Solicitor Kinnison and Canton Chamber of Commerce back a non public utility view. Wayland Chandler’s lawyers argue airport is a public utility and warrants a ballot. Arguments proceed in sequence, with Lengel reinstatement as police chief also under review after acquittal.
A blaze on Roumano American Oil Co. property near Moreni Romania in May was brought under control though still burning. Damage was estimated under $250000 with no casualties reported.
A bus crash near Geneva Ohio killed a young woman and injured at least 18 others. Harriet Woodworth of Ashtabula was identified as the deceased. driver Eugene Cunningham was in critical condition at Geneva hospital. Injured were taken to hospitals in Geneva Ashtabula and Painesville. The eastbound bus came from Cleveland.
Four members of the Scheetz family were hurt, one seriously, in a Wednesday night crash on Harrisburg Road. Thomas Scheetz 13 sustained a lacerated arm and possible skull fracture. Dorothy Scheetz 9 had deep scalp lacerations. Mrs Scheetz 49 and Mr Scheetz 49 suffered bruises. Cletus Culler 21 and passengers Roger Shoemaker 20 and Ed Grant 19 also injured. All were treated at Mercy Hospital. only Thomas Scheetz’s injury is serious.
Canton prepares a full Memorial Day program with a 9 am start and a 9:30 am parade featuring six sections, 12 military units, auxiliaries, school children and four bands. The day includes Westlawn Cemetery services, grave decorations, and holiday activities across clubs, courses, Meyers Lake events, and two Lakeside Stadium games between the Canton Terriers and Fort Wayne. An O. U. A. M. and D. of A. excursion to Tiffin is planned for June 9 with a $2.85 round trip fare.
In Pomeroys Ohio on May 29 Hobart Hedricks aged 12 and Bertram Venable aged 9 drowned after Hedricks ventured beyond his depth and Venable tried to aid him. Hedricks body recovered while Venable remains missing as river crews drag for him.
The program lists a 9:00 a.m. community memorial service at the city auditorium and a 9:30 a.m. military parade to Westlawn Cemetery for graves, with G A R veterans riding in cars. Grand Marshal H T Holman leads, with parade bands from American Legion Thayer National Guard and McKinley High.
In Caracas on May 29 the American consul at Maracaibo was told the body of John F. Rahe, an American, found dead of apoplexy near the Colombian border, will be held at Maracaibo pending instructions from relatives.

New York May 29 The 18th day of Prof Milton Crandall s second annual dance derby in Madison Square Garden fails to captivate the crowd as six surviving couples struggle. Crandall rejects Garden Corp s plan to extend sleep deprivation arguing his dancers trust him and refuse to be crucified for the 600 millionaires. The derby surpasses last year s 421 hour mark but public apathy grows as heat takes toll and gate receipts show modest gains.
Paris May 29 the plan to fix the amount Germany must pay former allied nations is settled though still subject to agreement on a few conditions. Thomas W Lamont said the settlement follows four months of negotiations among six creditor nations and Germany with approval of all delegations. The figure of 20 060 000 000 marks annual payments about 499 280 000 dollars is accepted on interpretation basis, subject to final agreement on remaining conditions.
Local weather expert Prof. Carl Meyer warned of another hot day with temperatures near 80 degrees if no thunder showers intervene. Wednesday's high reached 83, two degrees below the spring record of 85 set Tuesday, with little relief from the heat and calm, breezeless conditions.
Lieut. Herbert J. Fahy landed his Lockheed Vega monoplane at Los Angeles Metropolitan Airport at 5 39 41 p m after 36 hours 56 minutes 36 seconds aloft setting a new solo endurance world record without refueling. He surpassed Royal Thomas 34 50 by more than an hour and eclipsed Martin Jensen whose attempt was not recognized by the NA A.
In Ann Arbor Michigan a police raid found a barrel of beer at the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity house. Ray Hofelich of Fremont Ohio, newly elected president, was taken into custody for questioning. The raid followed a neighbor tip. Fred Wahr, assistant team of men at the University of Michigan, will investigate.
After weeks of debate Detroit's city council passed an ordinance forbidding sale of all foodstuffs on Sunday. Opponents warned the measure could close drug stores and importuned Mayor John C. Lodge to veto it.
In observance of Memorial Day The Canton Daily News released one edition at midnight and distributed before breakfast. Regular editions resume Friday.
