Postmaster general says the Canton post office and federal building are inadequate. A $380000 estimate for a new structure is proposed to replace the cramped quarters and improve vaults and approaches as inspectors report insufficient space for staff and workload.
United Press dispatch from Picardy reports three large scale German raids against American lines near Cantigny Fontaine Sous-Montdidier and adjacent positions. The attacks were repulsed with heavy losses and Americans conducted counterattacks reclaiming trenches.
Ten thousand Cantonians gathered at the Pennsylvania railroad station to bid farewell to 572 selected men entraining for Camp Gordon Georgia. The mobilization, Canton’s largest, was orderly with cheers tears and a patriotic concert by Thayer’s band and the Canton Marine band preceding departure.
Elizabeth Bowen Thomas aged 54 of Woodlangay NW died instantly as she waved goodbye to her draft-ward son Harry B. Thomas near a depot. The train scene halted when she collapsed. her son, seated on the train, was released from service pending later duty. She leaves husband T W Thomas, two children, and two brothers H H Bowen and B J Bowen.

The Central Union Telephone Co announces a July 1 rate increase for business lines only. Individual lines and private branch exchange trunks rise to 4.50, two party lines 3.50, from 4.00 and 3.30 respectively, with 16 years since the last raise. Residence rates unchanged.
The council passes a wartime measure aimed at idlers to ensure labor during the conflict. Timken Company seeks to buy city land to secure workers and prevent a Walter shortage.
The council granted salary increases for 160 city employees adding 50000 annually. It approved an urban work and fines ordinance for able bodied men aged 18 to 50. It authorized sale of 10000 in notes to fund the Safety department and Ha maker to buy 3000 feet of fire hose. It discussed Fourth street NW widening, steps removal and sidewalk replacement. It heard Canton Park Association request 1500, receiver pay hikes for six staff, Timken Co request to buy city land north of 15th SW, garbage office takeover proposal from City Treasurer Hill.
City council passed a measure by Ruff after debate, requiring able bodied men age 18 to 50 to work or be labeled vagrants. The ordinance imposes fines up to 50 dollars for those deemed idle. Timken Roller Bearing Co president HH Timken announced a preparatory school at the plant to train oper atives. The new facility, housed in a nearing completion building, aims to swiftly retrain non essential workers into war production roles with modern machine tools and complete equipment.
