Berlin reported May 27 that a Munich Gazette interview quotes James W. Gerard saying the United States may mediate peace negotiations. Officials note Germany and Austria-Hungary show tentative accord while U S mediation could occur soon, with talks possibly starting within days or months.
Rome May 27 Thousands of Italian refugees pour south from Vicenza province as Austrian forces invade Italy. Pope Benedict contributes 1000. Italian left wing withstands bombardment while Monte Pasubio and Conizagna repulse Austrian assaults. Artillery dominates front amid heavy losses and visible funeral pyres as dead are burned.
Allied troops in Salonica are being shifted to the Balkan front as Bulgarian and German forces concentrate in large numbers. Indications point to a planned offensive on Salonica. The photo shows British infantry crossing streams en route to the new sector.
Paris reports decisive gains in a six mile front northwest of Verdun. French forces penetrated German lines at Cumieres on the Meuse left bank capturing part of the village and advancing toward hill No 104. German counterattacks failed as French troops secured a firm footing in the ruins and repulsed attacks along the Meuse.
At El Paso Gen Gabriela Gavira Carranza commander in rez notified that Mexican government consented to confer with Pershing. Preparations for departure begin as talks target troop dispositions to prevent clashes between American and Mexican forces. Cervantes killing seen as influencing the situation as Pershing moves to Colonia Dublan with large quantities of road making machinery ordered.

Sara Quigley Silvernail filed for divorce from actor Clarke Silvernail now in Akron accusing him of infidelity while he counters with a divorce suit for non support and neglect. She calls his action a typical actor trick and says he trumped up charges to defeat her separation. She says she barely knows the named correspondent who is cited as his bosom companion.
Paris May 27 Gen Joseph Gallieni former French minister of war and Paris military governor died at Versailles after bladder trouble operation. He served 45 years and led the 1914 defense delaying German advance by using taxicabs to move 50 000 French troops to the Marne. He later briefly held the premiership before ill health forced resignation.
In Detroit on May 26 George Kessler twenty seven shot Mary Meddaugh twenty in the back as she walked the street. He then shot himself in the head and died at the hospital. Meddaugh is in critical condition. The couple had been sweethearts years ago before she married Meddaugh. She says his attack followed her rejection of his advances.
Washington May 27 A tentative agreement to vote next Thursday on the nomination of Louis D Brandeis to be associate justice of the supreme court was reached at a joint conference of democratic leaders and the senate.
National prohibition moves into the 1920 political arena as the Committee of 61 National Prohibition circulates to pressure all three parties for a prohibition plank. Led by figures like David Starr Jordan and Daniel A. Poling, the effort seeks five million members and claims 1 million names.
Cleveland May 27. Proposals to unite the reformed and united branches of the Presbyterian church were offered at today's session of the eight day convention in progress. Moderator W. B. Smiley said he believes the movement has majority support now, though it was voted down two years ago.
Yonkers policeman pursued Thomas McCormick for flirting on a street car. Mrs. Otto Peters intervened, rendering the fugitive unconscious with a right and left to the jaw, ending the chase.
The city welfare commission appointed by Mayor A Stolberg will not begin until summer. Chairman George H. Clark says seven social workers will study charitable work during the hot season and report to the mayor by year end on charity efficiency. Recommendations will cover housing and playgrounds.

Herbert Bigelow of Cincinnati, leader of Ohio's last constitutional convention, seeks 30 000 signatures to place an initiated bill for lifelong old age pensions at $1 per day for every dependent Ohioan over sixty. Support from labor, civic and church groups aims to fund pensions via income and inheritance taxes. If the legislature balks, a popular vote via initiative and referendum may follow.
The British steamer Denewood of 1211 tons, built in 1905 and from London, was sunk today. This marks the fifth ship destroyed in the last 24 hours.
E L Haymaker Republican councilman from the first ward reports no plan to resign. He says he sold his home in the first ward and is seeking a new residence within the same ward, noting resignation would only occur if he had to move out. He chairs the claims and law committee and serves on finance and streets and alleys.
