Sanford L. Wechsler of 1620 Harvard Place NW was named Champion Speller of the 16th Congressional District of Ohio at McKinley High School Friday night. His proud father rushed to the platform after the contest ended to hug the winner.
The 16th district spelling bee winners earned tickets to Washington presented by Herve W. Minew The Canton Daily News editor. Sanford Wechsler named best speller also received a silver loving cup. Quartet members include Wechsler Rubin Younker and Ruff with addresses listed in Canton Weston and Wayne counties. They will travel to Washington on a special school children excursion June 18.
An exuberant group of Lehman Junior High students filled the footlights to honor two Lehman boys after a victory. Sanford, son of Mr and Mrs Adolph Wechsler, and his running mate Ralph Rubin of Lehman, led the celebration with careful, steady pride.
Rep. Thomas S. Butler of Pennsylvania, chairman of the House Naval Committee, lay near death at the Burlington Hotel in Washington after a relapse from a heart attack at the Capitol a month earlier. He had been unconscious for over 24 hours as family and Dr. George W. Calver kept vigil. Butler, 72, faced a grim prognosis.
A New York Atlanta route pilot James R. Reid died when his mail plane crashed near the Pahannock road, after taking off with northbound mail from Richmond. Verne E. Treat attempted a forced landing in clear weather, continuing toward Washington as the southbound mail flew on.
The day reports indicate Congress will adjourn soon with promises of action. Mentions 225 million distributed and concerns that not all segments may receive their share.
National Association of Foremen closes two day session at McKinley High School Indianapolis with R Eming of Toledo as president and E A Tingley of Dayton as secretary. Membership stands 10 700 with 4 600 new members. program discussed foremen conferences and government funding.
Mather Pa May 26 Mumb ling John Wade a worker in the Mather mine was found after 147 hours buried in a shaft two and a half miles inside the mine. He was rescued in a gas filled interior where almost 200 workers were killed. He is hospitalized in a semi conscious condition. Rescue teams continue to recover bodies as they search the shaft.
William Klinger James W Huffman and Frank B Maullar of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission reversed a prior order granting the International Telepost Co of New York authority in 1926 to issue 10000 shares of common stock. The commission made permanent a January 10, 1927 suspension of further stock issues and opened an investigation into the companys activities, deeming the scheme largely foreign.
In Philadelphia on May 26 the seaplane XPN-12 completed an endurance flight of 17 hours 55 minutes with a 2,240 pound payload, landing at 4 47. The record was previously set three weeks earlier at the navy yards. The XPN-12 flight had been kept secret.
Grover Cleveland Fuller, a famed jockey from 15 years ago, died after a stabbing during a May 13 brawl in Chicago. He had spent two weeks in critical condition at Bridewell Hospital before dying yesterday.
Five bank robbers hit the Farmers and Merchants Bank Key at Wymore Nebraska. The bandits are linked to a Lamar Colorado holdup and a massive multi state manhunt with airplanes, volunteers, and armed units pursuing four bandits across Oklahoma Colorado Nebraska and New Mexico. The Lamar crime left two bank officials dead and two others missing presumed killed.
The Swing Johnson Boulder Dam bill faced a new filibuster after a 32 hour session. Supporters warn it may require another long meeting possibly through Sunday. Opponents argue Sunday sessions unlawful though one precedent exists.
Paul H. Kemerer of Carrollton spoke to Exchange Club members at the Courtland Hotel Friday. He described incidents and experiences from his Rotary International trip through England France and Belgium in 1927. He shared humorous moments and praised the natural beauty of those countries.
William Howard, a waiter from New London, returns from Boston after being reported buried at Hoboken. He says the deceased may be John Bickner of Los Angeles, to whom he sold his car and transferred registration papers.
Chang Tso Lin announces the Nationalist threat to Pekin ended after the Southern army was decisively defeated by Northern troops below Paoting Fu. He claims sweeping victories in the Paoting Fu sector and says the Nationalist advance has been checked.
Capt Kingsford Smith and his tri motor plane The Southern Cross reached Oakland after a pleasant flight from Los Angeles. The team plans to depart for Australia on Thursday if weather permits with four aboard including three associates.
Japan replied to American anti war treaty proposals by agreeing to negotiate among six powers toward a peace treaty. Tokyo said it would protect self defense rights and existing commitments but suggested these provisions need not be written into the pact.
Peggy Hopkins Joyce said she cannot marry every man she knows and denied plans to wed Count Frederick De Janze of London in New York on May 26.
Senate upheld President Coolidge veto on the McNary-Haugen farm relief bill. The 50 to 31 vote failed to reach a two thirds majority, forcing a record for the Kansas City convention. Republicans split with 20 voting for the bill and 19 for the president.
May 26 Alaska relief plane headed toward Point Barrow to locate five airmen missing since May 13. Pilot Mat A Nieminen, ex Texas flyer, left Kotsebue to Wainwright to refuel with radio support from Richard Heyser.
Mrs Calvin Coolidge leaves Northampton Massachusetts after a critical illness at Dickinson Hospital to travel to Washington. She will be accompanied by Dr Joel Boone and John J Fitzgerald on return, following a visit with her mother Mrs Lemira Goodhue and a stay during the Phillips Academy sesquicentennial events.
Rudell Health, 19, of Texas, rose to fame with Hollywood exploits and now faces arrest in Phoenix after arriving from California. She claims she will head home but fears more trouble as police question her. She reports picking up a young man who warned police she might be a shoplifter.
May 26 Chicago authorities sought Roger E. Watkins after his brother in law Guy Tresslar was arrested in a hotel here. Hartford brokerage theft topples $206000, detectives traced a call to relatives and placed Watkins in Chicago through late yesterday.
Upstate Republicans in New York consider Alanson Houghton ambassador to Britain as the GOP nominee for the Senate. He would run with Attorney General Albert Ottinger who is expected to pursue the governorship. Houghton, a dry, would challenge Senator Copeland who seeks re election. Copeland was backed by upstate drys in the last election.
Roald Amundsen, famed polar explorer, was asked by Norway to organize a relief expedition for the Italia after it vanished near Spitzbergen. The government and war department mobilized experts, while Nobile and Ellsworth’s Norway flight days are recalled amid the crisis.
Berlin dispatch reports a Junkers plane crashed between Port jmagd and Frankart. The pilot and two passengers died, one passenger was injured, and another escaped unhurt.
In Harlan Kentucky on May 2 Fred Romines five was believed alive and entombed in a Black Mountain Corporation coal mine where seven miners died in a Tuesday night explosion. Fellow workers who escaped saw him running from the scene but initial search failed to recover him.
