Communities to assemble services of organizations for suitable manifestations with emphasis on voluntary service and registration at local voting places.
Canton women organize with national body to support wartime economy. Executive board meets Saturday to outline plans to conserve food and respond to government requests. The league seeks citywide support, with nationwide efforts led by the national committee and Secretary Baker calling for women’s aid on June 6.
The City of Alliance withdrew its application for a receiver for Stark Electric Co from common pleas court at the city’s request. Judge Ake would have heard the case Thursday at 9. City Solicitor Morris filed the suit last Thursday to revoke the franchise for failing to provide required service and to appoint a temporary operator. With strike troubles settled Monday night, officials expect the dispute to end and the case dropped. The N. O. T is expected to receive city franchise Friday morning after commissioners reviewed a draft Thursday afternoon. Attorney John C. Welty pressed the proposal, which would permit the traction company to extend streetcar lines into Beldenav NE and Eighth-st NE.
Rachel Ashler of Alliance filed habeas corpus in common pleas court on Wednesday to secure her husband Sam Ashler’s release from Stark county workhouse. Ashler, sentenced to one year for cutting with intent to wound by May or Westover of Alliance, was to be heard by Judge Ake on Thursday. E P Speidel represents the plaintiff.
Moose parade organizers urge 2300 members to report for the event. About 2000 have already appeared and 300 more are asked to join and take best seats in the Auditorium pit. Parade forms at 7 p.m. with movement at 7 30 sharp through Fifth Street entrance.
Alliance police chase four escapees from Stark co workhouse Mahoning rd NE near Alliance. Walter Lewis Earl Marshall Clyde Worrest and Pearl Heafer, all recent burglars or train riders, were seen near the American Steel Foundry Co plant and eluded officers in a wood. They escaped by sawing a window bar and tying blankets. 40 other inmates remained in cells. Telegrams spread as detectives pressed for capture before night. Escape prompted calls for improvements at the workhouse.
London May 24. After a lull the Germans attacked the east coast early today. One man was killed in a Norfolk village. Bombs fell mostly in Norfolk country districts. Weather and mist hampered visibility as British airmen and high angle gunners engaged the raiders but the airships escaped.

A Canton meeting of the citizens military committee, musicians, and volunteers advanced plans to form a Canton battery of the First Ohio Field Artillery. Captain Albrecht of Battery B Akron said 100 local recruits would secure Canton’s place in the regiment, with broader enlistment to follow before June 5 registration day. Col. Frease pledged support from Columbus and locally, while local recruiters urged a capable musician to lead the band amid active recruitment at Courtland hotel.

French forces hold positions in the Ailerte valley and on the Viauclere plateau against German counter assaults. London reports the liner Transylvania sunk by a German submarine with 415 lives lost. The vessel, 548 feet long and launched in 1914, carried heavy guns on its last voyage from New York and was escorted near Glasgow before sinking.
Second day results from First Presbyterian church fundraiser show 4070 raised in two days at a noon luncheon. Jack Sell’s team led with 561, Ned Rustin’s team followed with 320, leaving 2430 still needed by Friday noon to reach the 7500 goal.
The Civil Service Commission will hold an examination for the City Physician position Tuesday at 4 PM in the commission office at City Hall. Applicants must file their applications two days before the examination. Adv by C E Hovis Secretary.
