News reports tally 225 dead across Pennsylvania Kentucky and West Virginia after explosions at Mather Coallieries Kinver Kentucky and Yukon West Virginia. Seventeen victims died at Yukon Pocahontas No 1 while 63 bodies were recovered overnight at Mather Colllieries with 210 trapped earlier. Sixty of the Kinver victims escaped but ten remain missing with five recovered.
Cantons seventh Community Fund drive raised 386062 with 25671 subscribers and 19090 contributing schoolchildren. The territorial army exceeded its goal across four city sections as all divisions topped targets. Campaign chair L J Noaker lauded the sales army for cooperation and efficient service.

Edward Linden of Avon 37 faces first degree murder charges after killing an eight month old baby Mildred Balmert and wounding Mrs. Clara Balmert in Dayton Ohio. Linden was guarded at the hospital as authorities said the attack followed a refused renewed relationship with Mrs Balmert. The mother was treated and released to make funeral arrangements for the child.
President Coolidge signed legislation raising the monthly pension for Civil War widows aged 75 and over from thirty to forty dollars. The measure expands monthly aid to affected veterans families as of today in Washington.

Wright Motors and Curtiss led gains while Transcontinental Air Transport opened strong on the curb market. New York stock traders push to restore a four hour day after two days of limited activity. The shift from five hours reduced volume and commissions, with daily share totals dropping from about four million to around 2.57 million, causing a substantial business loss.

Dr John M Vander Meulen criticized diminishing view of sin and rejected the insanity defense as a criminal excuse, likening faulty crime theory to bad music from bad players.
A powerful explosion shattered the Kenosha residence of District Attorney Lewis W. Powell. Powell and his four children were uninjured, though Powell was thrown from his bed by the blast which ripped a six foot hole in a sidewall.
Amsterdam May 23 Van Lear Black publisher of the Baltimore Sun suspended his London Capetown flight after wing tips became flabby from vibration. The Dutch airline said a flooded Khartoum landing field forced the suspension and the plane would be shipped to Amsterdam for repair. Black planned to resume toward Tokyo and return via Cairo after Cape Town.
Frank K. Haile publisher of the anti Hoover weekly Politics testified before the senate campaign committee that the investigation provided a million dollars worth of publicity for his paper. He said he alone bore a weekly loss of 4260 dollars and that money came from his private fortune and Mexican interests.
The rocket automobile built by scientists reached 125.25 miles per hour in 40 seconds at the Avus track as Fritz von Opel piloted the vehicle. The project aims to develop a rocket plane within six years to cut transatlantic travel to five hours. The test drew 2,000 in person and millions on radio, signaling the first official test of a man carrying skyrocket.
Walter Anderson, veteran Sandusky pilot, was burned to death when his plane went into a tail spin and crashed 1,500 feet at Parker Brothers airport. Bell boy Ben Buser, who Anderson had mentored, escaped uninjured as the craft burst into flames after Anderson tried to right it.
