Atlantic City May 73 A gift of 750000 to the relief and maintenance fund of the Presbyterian church was announced at the assembly. It was given by the late Mrs D Willis James of New York who had contributed 250000 before her death. Mrs James also made large contributions to the Methodist and Congregational churches.
Paris May 22 German attempts along a twenty eight mile Verdun front faltered as French forces repulsed two assaults on Hill No 304 and drove Germans from trenches near Thiaumont farm. Despite gains around fort d Vaux the French held firm and casualties mounted amid the continuous artillery barrage along the Meuse.
Amid furious Alpine fighting the Austrians push into Italian lines in the Tyrolese Alps as Italy falls back from seven to ten miles. Austrian critics hail the capture of Italian positions on the Lavarone plateau east of Rovereto as a major achievement. Austrian forces encircle Arairo and press toward Costabel Stalsted while Italians struggle under heavy artillery and endure prisoner losses. Von Hoetzes troops hope Italians cannot rally for a counter strike, seeking aid from allies if needed.
