U. S. Destroyers Hunt Submarine Off California Coast
San Francisco May 19 Destroyers were ordered to search for a strange submarine sighted off San Diego after a report from Fort Rose Crans. Acting Commandant Wood said the submersible could not be American and no foreign submarines were known to operate off the California coast. Aviator Lyman Doty also reported spotting a submerged object near the Golden Gate.

Pershing mobilizes infantry division for France
The U S mobilization under General Pershing began, organized mainly as infantry with no cavalry. Four infantry regiments replace usual artillery and cavalry units, and a 2600 strong veteran Marine regiment from Haiti San Domingo and Mexico will serve as dough boys in the trenches under Col Charles A Doyen. Pershing returned to Washington to finalize plans and staff for his command.
