Canton officials adopt Pratt sewage plans and a Moser site for water and park needs. Harbert to drill wells with a $6000 bond, purchase a well machine, and seek auxiliary pumping stations as tests expand north of Meyers Lake and near the creek valley.
Mrs Henry F Dimock of Washington president of the George Washington Memorial association says bids from architects will be requested in a few weeks for the national tribute building in Washington. Canton residents support the effort by purchasing George Washington Memorial buttons whose proceeds fund the children's wing. Mrs A C Bragt and Miss Mary Martin lead sales in Canton.
The Fellinger house bill 104 regulating advertising becomes law May 26 and the Business Men's Association will mail Canton merchants notices of the effective date and discuss the bill at the next meeting. Louis Dueble credits the B M A with pushing the measure to curb fraudulent ads and support legitimate campaigns. Daytone flood relief note: nine Torah scrolls damaged in the House of Abraham synagogue were buried in the Jewish cemetery.
A thousand readers clipped Daily News coupons to redeem free admission at Lake Theater for the first summer vaudeville show in the park. The free pass works like a ticket for the Monday Matinee and drew a larger audience than last season despite chilly weather.
Canton council voted to appropriate 90000 for park construction along West Creek from Lakest to Fairfields. An ordinance to issue bonds will be drawn up for next Monday, with Service Director Harbert guiding the plan to start this summer and finish by next year.
Eleven speeders were fined in police court Tuesday as Chief Smith announced five more arrests in his crusade. The list includes Timken, McKinney, Clementz, O Wesney, Zinninger, Wilhelm, Miller, Hunt, Wiley, Joseph and Richards with fines of five dollars and costs. Timken quipped about his first time being caught, while Hunt said he mistook Canton for Akron. Cover was freed of a speeding charge after proving he sold his motorcycle. New arrests include Byers, Keim, Neff, Noble and Furney for auto and motorcycle speeding.
Mildred Stuart, eight, daughter of John and Mrs. Stuart of Stuart Furniture Co, remains in Mercy hospital after a flobert rifle shot to the eyes from her brother Gordon during a youngsters wild west show. Doctors say sight loss may be permanent and several days remain for a definite prognosis. Meanwhile Branch No. 10 C M B A members are urged to meet at the public square at 7:30 pm to travel to Massillon for a social event.
Burton W Gibson, a New York lawyer, stands trial before Supreme Court Justice Arthur Thompkins in Newburgh New York on a murder charge. The case stems from the death of Countess Rose Szabo at Greenwood Lake when a boat overturned during their outing. Previous trial ended with a hung jury as prosecutors argued strangulation before the water entry.
The commission approved electing city officers to specific directorates with a 2500 annual pay, amid heated debate. They also adopted eight hour day and minimum wage amendments along with a franchise amendment, while discussing how these changes affect city employees.
Harry Lewis, a Canton decorator, is expected to win the Fourth of July decorating contract. He met B. M. A. officials in Canton Tuesday to discuss street decorations from North to Ninth on Market, McKinley to Cherry on Tuscarawas, and Cherry to the Pennsylvania railroad. The B. M. A. will contract the street decorations, with business-block decor by private parties. Louis Double said the private decorations would be very elaborate, noting Lewis’s 15 years of Canton work and merchant interest before his arrival.
