Chief Justice Edward White Dies After Valiant Struggle
Washington May 19 Edward Douglas White chief justice of the United States Supreme Court died at the Arlington Hospital at 2 oclock this morning. He faced bladder trouble and complications after an operation last Friday aged 75. Associates remained at his bedside as his condition worsened with a sinking spell on Tuesday afternoon. White was appointed in 1910 by President Taft and was known for his strict sense of duty and strong defenses of rights and prerogatives of the court. He stayed largely in semi retirement but remained a beloved figure in the capital.
