In Cincinnati on May 18 Judge E M Hurley reported two youths climbed into his auto near Melrose parish school and drove off before he could apprehend them. He would recognize the pair if seen again.
Data shows 1,923 subscribers pledging a combined 96,650.70 in the industrial section on day one. North east led with 22,982 while H. E. Buehler’s team topped the day with 32,079, toward a $370,366 goal across sections including northwest 6,232 and southeast 5,836. Major captains and speakers urged public support and patronage of local stores and industry.
May 18 report from East Liverpool notes Mayor Wa. fy Fogo of Wellsville will seek city council approval of a reward at least $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the men who shot and killed Patrolman James Renhen as he walked on his beat early Monday. Two suspects have been apprehended.
After failed tries to end his life, Lt. Ross Holland aged 39 was committed to a ten year term in the Ohio prison system. He pleaded guilty to a statutory charge related to the incident.
City council members press to merge the safety and service director roles and grant the police chief authority to appoint nine patrolmen to the detective bureau. The measures, aimed at backing Chief S. A. Lengel, were referred to the judiciary committee after introduction by James H. Eimsley.
Mayor Stanford M Swartz asked the court of appeals to reverse Judge Benner Jones’s common pleas ruling restoring Saranus A Lengel as chief of police. Lengel had been removed by the mayor and later restored by the civil service commission.

Hamilton says the shooting was accidental as a hair trigger pistol fired unexpectedly. Police testify his account remained unchallenged.
Berlin May 18. Tax and customs revenues of the German Reich for 1925 rose above the estimates by about 86 million marks, per a Finance Ministry report. Total revenues fell by 476 million marks from 1924.
A letter allegedly from 16 year old Hazel Edna Willison claims she left home willingly and is safe in Canton with a good home. The message contradicts a prior note claiming she would never return, though handwriting and authenticity remain uncertain. Canton Daily News reports both letters and urges cautious verification.
Washington May 18 Uncle Sam will enforce strict discipline over air mail service. The senate approved a bill authorizing the postmaster general to deduct trip prices and assess fines when air mail contractors fail to perform. The measure, by Senator Moses of New Hampshire, empowers deductions up to three times the trip price if the failure is the contractor's fault.
Safety Director James A. Rice appointed Patrolman Charles Martin to take over duties of a general traffic director, despite City Solicitor James E. Kinnison’s opinion that the move lacks authority. Rice urged the need for a traffic expert in the business district and criticized Police Chief Lengel for limiting patrol adjustments and gambling-watch assignments.
In Cleveland on May 18, the Common Pleas Judges prepared to hear charges of excessive profits from jail pies. Louie Sagers, known as "Pie Man," claimed jail pie profits favored Sheriff Fred Kohler who allegedly supplied prisoners at half the budget. He cited a $12 six month deficit versus Kohler's $120.94 gain and accused underpriced jail items including five cent newspapers and other small goods.
President Coolidge changed plans to adjourn Congress by June 1. He wants the French debt settlement, refunding over 2.9 billion dollars in war loans, ratified this session. House to take up first. Senate to wait for French Parliament approval by May 27 and ratification by June 2. If not, Senate may push ratification to next fall.
In Cleveland on May 18 16 year old Jacob Weiselberg fell from a moving truck and is at the point of death at a local hospital. His wife may be affected by the tragedy.
The Timken Roller Bearing Co plans a $1.5 million expansion to build a new plant for railroad car bearings. The project will vacate 17th Street SW property, acquire 36 parcels, and start immediately with completion targeted around January 1 1927. The expansion aims to meet rising bearing demand across industries and attract new customers daily.
May 18 report from northern Minnesota details the destruction of Cramer north of Duluth with the town wiped out. One firefighter killed, relief trains sent to fire zones as roads close and schools suspend amid outbreaks burning nearly 100000 acres of timber and cut lands.
Police arrested Ot hers Say as they nabbed Ot hers Kaltiser Mansfield and Morris Lerner both 308 Carrell Ave NE for being suspicious persons. Officers Wilhelm and Reiss said a car load of men arrived at 1 25 AM Tuesday near 1417 McGregor NW to attack a family. Kaiser and Lerner were seized while the others sped off.
Lt Commander R. E. Byrd, first to fly over the North Pole, will not undertake further Arctic flights and will depart for home this Thursday, as he advised Secretary of the Navy Wilbur via radio.
Mayor Swarts hailed Timken’s large Canton addition as a major step toward a broader industrial program. He noted the site selection over other Timken plants and said the project would create many new jobs for Canton’s workers and boost local business.
William Kuhns of the Canton Chamber of Commerce praises the Timken Roller Bearing Co. for expanding locally with a 1.5 million dollar plant. He says internal growth reflects Canton’s strong future and urges appreciation for Timken’s commitment.
John C Felton was reelected mayor of Grove City near Columbus after a political shuffle. He had been suspended by Gov Donahey pending a hearing on gambling at Beulah Park. Felton resigned before the hearing, and Dr A B White became mayor before resigning as council president, leading to Felton's automatic succession.
Cincinnati May 18 The trial of Mrs Mary Clay Roberson 25 negress began with state witnesses. Roberson is charged with first degree murder for the killing of Henry Knapp marshal of Addyston near Cincinnati in February. Four women sat in the jury box and she was not under armed guard when taken to the scene with jurors last night.
In Clean, N Y on May 18 Rudy Blakesley was hurled about ten feet across rooftops when his head struck a high voltage wire. His condition is reported critical with injuries described as serious and life threatening.
