Akron officials plan a probe with state inspectors into the May 16 restaurant collapse at Main and Quarry streets that sank into an adjacent excavation. Nine died and 28 were injured as diners fled the blast and falling walls, with two seriously ill.
Hartford patrons petitioned the board to reconsider BE. H. Curtis and principal Bh. F. Schell’s positions. The board referred the matter to a teachers committee, urging reconsideration. Harmony condemned the petition tactic while Schell’s allies argued for reinstatement.
City council endorses a five million gallon per day water supply expansion. Plans call for three new wells on NE street, three existing wells in service, and a four unit pump system, with total costs around thirty thousand dollars amid committee debate over site location and future reservoir.
Canton city schools may adopt a Gary style rotation to manage a coming pupil influx. Superintendent J. K. Baxter will tour Chicago Hibbing and other cities to study the system and report back. The district expects 30 to 36 percent more pupils next year, with partitions removed and rooms doubled in capacity to avoid new schools. Baxter will depart soon.

Military guards along American railway lines near the border were doubled after a wreck near St Hancock injuring three. Mexican train wreckers are accused of drawing spikes to derail trains as authorities report a campaign of destruction on traffic to the front. Guards will arrest suspicious walkers on right of way and may shoot to prevent rail tampering. The region remains hard to fully guard with troops. Maj Langhorne and Col Sibley with troopers headed back toward the border from Mexico, while Carranza cavalry patrolled nearby. Two Mexicans were arrested over fires at Ft Bilsa. investigators deem the blaze incendiary.
Mayor Stolberg urges immediate formation of a plan to extend N C T lines into the northeast end from Tuscarawas Street. He cites mill-driven demand for better service and argues the traction company has blocked expansion. A canvass of other sections is proposed to identify further extensions and protect future growth.
City council debated extending the northeastern boundary to empower the North Omaha Telephone to extend lines. They adopted a water committee report seeking 20,000 for a NE end pumping station and heard a final offer to clear title to McKinley Park for 5,000. A plan to vacate Lawnav NW for cemetery use was tied to graves kept 100 feet back, with no action. Officials discussed unsafe fruit stands, postponed a well drilling machine purchase for a week, and noted North Omaha Telephone offering 65 for waterworks park rent, with a lawsuit to recover back rent. A service director was tasked to repair the Madison cross. The council also authorized 5,000 in indebtedness certificates for the service department.
