Canton’s eighth annual community fund drive ends with a grand total of $390,900.37 from about 26 000 subscribers, 17 750 via the civic fund, over the goal of $390 140. The day’s total was $33,953.59 and the victory dinner reported strong oversubscriptions across all divisions.
A triple explosion and fire at Cleveland Clinic Hospital on May 15 left 65 dead and more than 100 others injured. Flames trapped many inside as two hundred people were in the building. Unofficial reports cite an exploding basement X ray machine and pharmacy chemicals as causes.
Edward B. McLean publisher of the Washington Post files a libel suit seeking $1,000,000 against the Philadelphia Record alleging a May 13 article implied he attended a disgraced dinner at the Belgian embassy. He denies attending the dinner and denies any conduct that would embarrass the Belgian ambassador or offend President Hoover.

I M Taggart 79 longtime Massillon banker and chairman of the Ohio Merchants Trust Co dies at home after a three week illness. He led civic and banking work in Massillon for decades and served on state and national banking committees. He leaves a widow six children eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral set for Friday at 2 30 from his home with burial in Massillon Cemetery.
Four year old John Cantean, son of Mr and Mrs Joan Cantean of 1907 Harrison Avenue SW, who suffered a fractured skull and hip when struck by a car driven by Paul Hershey of 720 Harriet Avenue NW, showed slight improvement at Aultman Hospital on Wednesday morning and is expected to recover.

Graf Zeppelin, under pledge not to fly over French munitions works, will begin its second transatlantic voyage at 6 a.m. tomorrow from Friedrichshafen. Commander Hugo Eckener urged a prompt start due to French restrictions, with the airship needing to cross the border by 9 a.m. or return. The German permit allows crossing on May 15 or 16 between 7 and 9 a.m., with prior notice required for any later attempt.

Louis Wesley Barnes aged 16 returns to New York after a 680 mile trek to confess. He tells police he and Mike Brozerich were involved in a basement incident at the Hotel Pennsylvania and seeks detectives Sheehan and Leef for answers. At Langley Field on May 15 representatives from Packard Motor Car Co show a buried Diesel aircraft engine on a plane that landed from Detroit amid a national aeronautics meeting. Designer L. M. Wollson and pilot Walter Lees emerged from the craft as officials discuss diesel aviation prospects.
Bruce Smith a 37 year old World War veteran and Columbia Law School graduate works with the Bureau of Municipal Research. He will aid Chicago in addressing gun violence and police issues by joining the citizens advisory committee and begin June 15 to help make the city safer for visitors.
In Charleston South Carolina 700 cadets at Citadel Charleston College halted a one day hunger strike after breakfast eggs. A cadet said everything is fine now and that they had eggs for breakfast. The undergrads walked out yesterday morning protesting dining hall food.

Madison May 15 Wets won the first senate skirmish in their effort to repeal the state dry law in line with last month’s wet dry referendum. The assembly non-concurrence repeal motion failed 19 to 11 and two amendments that would void the repealer were defeated. A vote on the repeal, which earlier passed the assembly, was expected soon.
Dr. Arthur Mothwurf president of the American Bemberg and Glantzstoff Rayon plants said Lieut. Gov. Herbert Lehman of New York had not resigned from the directorate over the strike. He denied any disagreement with Lehman and promised a statement on the report.
