An explosion at the Mexican Crude Rubber Co. plant in Delray Detroit suburb destroys the one story building. Twelve men are dead and ten are missing with as many as thirty believed trapped. Rescue crews search ruins as three others are badly mangled and rushed to hospital.
Mayor Stolberg leads a push for a new building code to replace an inadequate ordinance. He complains the council will not fund a stenographer for revision work and he must proceed largely alone. Fireproof standards remain weak on public streets amid ongoing danger.
Edward B. Hansen of 2528 Tuscarawas W Canton important local businessman and leader took out petitions to seek the Democratic nomination for state senator. He follows James A. Rice who announced earlier as the second Democratic candidate while J. R. Wise of Massillon is the lone Republican candidate.

George W. Korn, a wealthy real estate operator and politician, says he allowed his wife to divorce so she could marry his friend J. M. Thorne. He claims the sacrifice will bring her happiness, and the six year old son will spend equal time with Korn and the future Mrs. Thorne.

Members of Washington Council No 12 will travel to Akron on Saturday May 16 to confer the third degree on a large class for Commodore Perry Council No 209. The degree team leaves Canton at 1 p.m. and work occurs in the hall at Main and Exchange streets in Akron. All members invited to accompany.
The YMCA fundraising drive reaches 157859 by Friday noon with a goal of 250000 and a midnight deadline. Major gifts include W R Timken 10000 and William S Hawk 1000 while the Boys Brigade surpasses 87000 with new campaign records. Meetings held at 6 pm and 930 pm as industries citywide boost the effort.
Congressman Whitacre calls on Governor Cox to explain $12,000 slush fund tied to the Warnes tax law referendum. Brissel, a 1913 tax assessor candidate, presents checks and statements alleging $100 contributions from Harry Weiss and George Brissel to influence the referendum. Brissel says funds were not returned and details his part in the fund drive.
The agreement requires securing at least 200000 by May 15 1914. After this condition is met, 20 percent of the total is due July 1 1914 and 20 percent in four, eight, twelve, and sixteen months thereafter.

A famed Russian dancer performed for Emperor Wilhelm II and Queen Victoria in a special affair. After the courtesy the dancer kissed the Kaiser and rouge left on his gloved hand, a moment the emperor treated as a humorous embarrassment.
The board of education approved purchasing the Albert and Butcher properties for ward school sites and will repay property owners once the deed and abstract are ready. The Albert site may not host a school this year, with officials eyeing a Liberty district site and possible portable moves. A separate resolution grants N O T right of way on 9th Street SW.

The mediation conferences at Niagara Falls were postponed from Monday to Wednesday at the Brazilian ambassador's request. State department officials say the delay aims to avoid rushing the Huerta delegates as they plan to arrive in Washington at 1:35 PM tomorrow. The postponement disrupted the planners travel plans but a new itinerary will be arranged.
Jess Graham arrested Wednesday night faced reckless driving charges in police court Friday. Witnesses said he tore down a telephone pole and iron posts during a mad ride. Frank Bedle George Curtis W I Butler and a motorcycle cop testified. State chief witness Dr C E Schilling was absent. The case was continued.
Ohio's public utilities commission for the first time set a physical valuation of Bucyrus Light & Power Co at 95 000 dollars, with 81 000 as actual property worth and 14 000 for overhead costs. The move signals lower future rates and tighter capital values for utilities, while the company’s claimed values are disputed as absurd.
