Canton’s census figure settled at 87 091, per Census Director Ray Harbert. Superintendent Wilson Hawkins notes school enrollment rose from 7,226 in 1910 to 13,278, an 84 percent gain, and predicts Canton will need 15 to 20 new school buildings in the next decade if growth persists.
Herman R. Witter, Canton mayor, cites census figures as positive. He cites housing and street car issues as limits to growth and says with street car control settled and building materials easing, Canton should reach 125000 residents within five years.
Grace Walton a postal clerk and famed train robber, robbed the New Orleans Limited at Gillman Ill, escaping with about 80 000 in gold and bank notes. A gun battle with Chicago police left Walton fatally wounded and Chief Mooney shooting him at his apartment.
Charles A. Steineck Irving Sweeney and the General Baking Co face an abatement plea in common pleas court alleging the grand jury that issued the indictment was illegal due to a mentally incompetent juror. Judge Pontius to hear the plea with Monday as the original trial date. Counsel Jeffers Welty and Hurt represent the defendants.

John Bunch of a farm eight miles south of Canton was jailed in Starkeo on a prohibition act charge after deputies and a federal agent raided his home. They seized a 12 gallon still in operation, 20 gallons of mash, and six gallons of raisin jack. He said Thursday would be his last day on the farm and that he planned to sail for his native land next week.
The George Phillips case in Akron heard both sides on intent and insignia wearing of Free and Accepted Masons by a nonmember. Defense attorney Haloway and police prosecutors Kinnison and Ruff spoke as the judge prepared to charge the jury. A verdict was anticipated late Friday afternoon.

About 16 000 rebels face roughly 6 000 Carranza soldiers with reports of 8000 losses and talks of surrender and safe conduct to Vera Cruz. Provisional president nomination and British inquiries accompany the front line developments.
Deposed Mexican president Carranza, offered safety and an escort to Vera Cruz, refuses to surrender and remains defended by a small guard near Rinconada in the Orizaba foothills. Obregon reports he has been surrounded since Sunday as rebel forces close in.

The Hirschheimer Bros. store on the square will reopen Saturday morning after a four day closure caused by a recent fire. Insurance agents declined to adjust the stock valued at 175000 to 200000, stating merchandise was not damaged by fire or water. The fire affected the tailor shop on the third floor, with no other clothing losses. The shop has been repaired and the rest of the store prepared for reopening.
